Description

Rob Machado's hotly anticipated Firewire Helium Seaside has landed.

Whilst absolutely loving the skatey feel of his Go Fish over the last couple of years, Rob was interested in fine-tuning the board to achieve a little more performance for more carves, tighter turns and some composure in the tube.

Rather than 'throw the baby out with the bath water', Rob set about refining his beloved Go Fish into a 'ripper' where the Go Fish remains a more 'cruisey' and fun surfboard.

The tail on the Seaside has less area, the tips of the swallow have been narrowed and the nose pulled in creating more curve and a board that fits the pocket and turns tighter in the critical part of the wave.

The Seaside is designed as a quad and has its concaves and bottom contours based around that...so don't ask if there will be a five fin or thruster option...it's a quad period! Rob said, "I actually redesigned the entire concave setup that I've been using in the Moonbeam and go Fish, and did it with a quad setup in mind so that it all works together with the new fin set (coming soon from Futures!)".

Rob named the 'Seaside' after his home break Seaside Reef, Cardiff CA. The board is designed to excel in beach breaks, point breaks. Rob decided on Firewire's Helium construction for the Seaside to keep it nice and lightweight, super-responsive and really durable and ideal for smaller and less punchy conditions.

Firewire’s Helium tech is all about making an already amazing set of construction options even better. Its lighter, more durable than regular PU boards and thus far is proving a little more robust than Firewire's LFT construction. High Density Aerospace Composite Deck Skins and a new Paulownia/Balsa mix on the rails gives a faster flex response. Having surfed the tech in a couple of different models it does feel light but the speed through a stiffer feel and responsiveness is exceptional, Helium is here to stay.

Firewire surfboards are more durable than other surfboard manufacturing processes, and for 90% of surfers they will improve your surfing. Firewire is pushing the limits of applying new technology and innovation to surfboard design and always has an eye on the environmental impact of what they do, they truly are different to the other board companies out there. Firewire have come a long way since the early boards and the range of shapes and tech just gets better and better. A big chunk of the boards in the range are perfectly suited to the waves that 90% of us surf on a regular basis so if you haven't already give them a try.

The staff here have surfed pretty much every surfboard in the Firewire range at some time or another and we speak to surfers from all over the world and get their feedback on how the boards perform in all sorts of conditions so we're well placed to talk about all aspects of Firewire surfboards. We're happy to consider trading in your old board against a new Firewire, so If you have any questions about this we'd be delighted to answer them and advise on any potential board choices or enquiries you might have, just drop us an email to info@boardshop.co.uk or call us on 0044 (0) 1243 674250.

Boardshop + firewire seaside
I'm from Portugal and because Spain is closer, I tried to purchase the seaside from a Spanish site, but was a really bad decision... they didn't had the board in stock afteral... they give me my money back and then I started to speak with the guys of Boardshop, and they were amazing. According to my skills and weight (moderate and 90 kg) they told me which would be the best board (5'11). The seaside arrived much faster than I thought and it's incredibly!!! Easy paddle, really fast and a wave destroyer. Usually I surf in small waves where the long board guys have the biggest number of waves... ....no more

This board is insane
I don't even know where to start, so I guess I'll start from t he very beginning.
I had been flirting with this board for a good couple of months now. Then I came upon Noel Salas's review on Youtube (if you don't him defnitely check him out) and I was finally sold.
Got in contact with BoardshopUK and with Matt's precious help we quickly pinpoint the correct dimensions for me. I'm a big guy at 6´2 and 190LBS and my surfing ability is a 6 from 1 to 10 according to my regular shaper. That said, I wanted this board specifically to surf 1-4 feet clean to cleanish conditions.
Got the board 3 days later with the Rob Machados set of fins, a 5´10´´ stock dims (39L).
Tried it out yesterday and today over 4 sessions in 3-4 feet very good conditions and I was blown away.
Excellent paddler, easily gets into waves. Once you're up and do the first pump up the wall, get ready. The board simply flies and I started thinking to myself: "all right, now how the hell is this gonna turn?!" That's where the ultra-thin and ultra-sensitive tail area and the concave game under the board kick in. Beautiful turns, ultra-responsive (a little unforgiving too because of that), great arc radius. So then I thought to myself as the last section approaches: "Ok, there's no way this thing has good projection on top of all this." Wrong again. It's obviously not a performance shortboard but it has no problem getting up there and smacking the lip.
If, like me, you've been flirting with this board for a long time I hope this review will give you the extra push. It's one of the best boards I've ever surfed in small waves and by far the most fun.

FireWire seaside 5’9
Thanks Dave price for the order, and Matt on sizing,
Well it’s a lovely shape and helium is very different so light and hard plastic feeling almost,
Went with the robs quad fins as that’s what they made for,
Surfed 3-4’ clean, i was a bit nervous of how light and floaty is was but as I got used to it, it just got better and better with confidence,
It seems to just run and run where ever you point it.
Cuts and turns neatly, I’d say it’s a clean wave board I wouldn’t want to take it out in rough choppy waves.
I wanted some volume so settled on 5’9 but I could have easily went smaller now I know how light and floaty the helium is.
I’d recommend this board to any especially if they enjoy the fish style

Seaside 5'6"
I bought this board on the strength of my love for the Chumlee, also in the Helium tech, but I wanted a bit more hold for the better days. This board is living up to expectations. It has so much get up and go that it makes everything seem easier. Paddles well, glides in, effortless acceleration, it really is a joy. The rail around the fins is really tapered so it has a lot of bite which I guess contributes to the drive it generates and also makes it extremely responsive, something which initially took a bit of getting used to. The board felt really comfortable in head high, head and a bit clean surf, feeling drivey but loose too. I went with my groveller dims, after getting some advice from Matt, rather than my short board dims, and I'm glad I did, just for the extra paddle power and given its responsiveness I'm not sure I'm missing out much on manoeuvrability. Really stoked with a super fun board!!
