From the shaper
“The Phantom is the middle child in the Ghost Family, a step-down version of John John Florence's current favourite model designed to be your go-to board for everyday conditions. Best in waist-high to overhead waves of all types, your daily driver with a high performance edge. Ride it around your height, a touch wider and about the same thickness as your Ghost” - Jon Pyzel

What Do We Think Of The Pyzel Phantom
Sizing the adaptable Phantom
The Phantom can be used by surfers of differing abilities, it just depends how it’s sized. A decent shortboard surfer will look for the perfect balance of length and volume; for example - a 70kg 6’ rider should look at the 5’11 or 6’0, roughly 30 to 33 litres to get the best from the board and their skill set.
An intermediate surfer may need to add a little length and a couple of litres volume for a more comfortable and forgiving everyday shortboard.
Home and away
The Pyzel Phantom makes a great grab-and-go board for home and alongside the Pyzel Gremlin and Ghost models would make the perfect travel quiver. Score yourself an Ocean & Earth Triple Coffin and load it with the Ghost Family. John John’s Ghost will thrive in all but the monster stuff where a step-up might be required; the Phantom will be your go-to for the average days and the Gremlin will squeeze the maximum amount of fun from anything left over.
Fins and setup
The Phantom is designed and works best as a thruster, delivering control and consistency. This setup allows the board to perform in a wide range of conditions. A balanced fin template works best for a nice predictable feel with the ability to release the fins when required. We love the Futures Pyzel Control Series or the FCS II Performer in Performance Core tech. Both work in anything from waist high to well overhead.
Matt’s review on the Phantom
Portugal with a Pyzel quiver
I took a two-board Pyzel quiver, the Phantom and Pyzel Gremlin on a two week trip to Portugal and couldn't have picked a better combination. The Phantom was definitely my go-to as the waves had plenty of punch and ranged from waist high to well overhead. The board instilled heaps of confidence especially when the conditions were a little more serious…the board just felt solid, predicable but still plenty of fun.
I was definitely surfing with more speed than usual, some of this was down to the wave but the board just never seemed to get away from me! My surfing improved massively on this trip and most of it was down to this amazing board.
“To summarise; I would recommend this board to almost any surfer, it does everything you’d want it to do. You’re getting a daily driver which works for the intermediate and accomplished surfer alike…just comes down to sizing. This is a board you REALLY NEED TO SURF, you’ll love it. You’ll catch heaps of waves and surf better than you have before and have a tonne of fun while you’re at it.” - Matt
Jon Pyzel's boards are ‘hot’ right now and are one of the most sought after surfboard brands out there and it’s no coincidence that current world champion John John Florence chooses Pyzel for his boards.
