The key feature of Mini Mal Surfboards is that they have a wide and rounded nose, giving the boards more stability and improved wave catching and paddling. A Mini Mal surfboard has all the attributes of a longboard board but in a smaller size making it far easier to control, progress on and transport. This makes them ideal for beginner surfers or surfers who surf infrequently and want to have fun on a board Mini Mal Surfboards will catch waves easily and be stable enough for riders to get to their feet and ride the wave. The brand name 'Mini Mal' is derived from a shortened version of mini Malibu, a Malibu surfboard is a long surfboard, usually 9’ or longer. The Mini Mal style of surfboard works perfectly for beginners or infrequent surfers by offering more volume, width and length than a standard board. This combination makes the board more stable, once the surfer is up and riding, and crucially makes the board easier and faster to paddle. The ease of paddling is key to make sure the surfer catches as many waves as a possible. It’s simple, the more waves a surfer catches - the more fun they have and the quicker they build confidence and progress.
When choosing a mini mal surfboard, the correct size will be dependent on several factors, these include the weight and the height of the surfer, how often they will go surfing and in what kind of waves they’ll surf. Truth is there is no absolute correct size for any individual because there are so many factors to consider. However, here at Boardshop we have the experience of many years of surfing and thousands of satisfied customers so we will always get the surfer as close as possible to the best size for their requirements.
We use some basic rules based on a surfer’s height and weight to narrow down the most suitable surfboard. For example, a surfer of 75kgs and 5’ 10 in height who will surf in waves from thigh to chest high every two weeks would choose a 7’ 6 mini mal surfboard. A heavier surfer between 90 and 100 kgs in the 6ft+ range would need the size and volume of an 8ft to 9ft board. Someone who is lighter, under 70kgs would find more than enough stability and volume in a board from 7ft to 7ft 6. We have created a brilliant surfboard size guide here that will help further.
