Axel Lorentz Shapes is the creation of Axel Lorentz, one of Europe’s most respected surfboard shapers. With over 25,000 surfboards shaped and three decades of experience, Axel has built a reputation for designing high-performance shortboards and innovative alternative shapes that work in real-world conditions.
Raised in the French Alps, Axel’s shaping journey began in the Basque Country in the 1990s and quickly evolved into an international career. He spent winters in Australia refining his craft, before becoming backshaper for Peter Daniels in Europe, working with world champion Adriano de Souza. Axel also collaborated with Matt Biolos of Lost Surfboards, producing boards for Europe, and later became head shaper at Pukas, where he pushed big-wave designs for pros like Natxo Gonzalez and Grant “Twiggy” Baker.
His designs have earned global recognition. Five out of six boards he shaped reached the finals in Stab in the Dark, including the fastest-ever board tested with Mick Fanning, clocked at 38.4 km/h. Axel has also twice been invited to the prestigious Icons of Foam shaping event at The Boardroom Show. His boards have featured in the Electric Acid Surfboard Test, proving his ability to balance performance with creativity.
Now, working from his own factory in Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the French Basque Country, Axel shapes under his own name. The Axel Lorentz Shapes range includes versatile mid-lengths, progressive twins, grovelers, and competition-ready shortboards, all hand-finished to the highest standards. From small summer waves to heavy reef barrels, there’s a board in the lineup designed to perform.
If you’re looking for surfboards that blend European craftsmanship with global performance credibility, explore the Axel Lorentz Shapes collection today.
