Description

The Lost California Twin surfboard is a long-awaited collaboration between Matt 'Mayhem' Biolos and Mark Richards.

These two legends of the surf-world have joined forces to produce the perfect modern twin + trailer fish with MR's classic lines and a large injection of Mayhem's small wave magic.

The start point was MR's best selling modern shortboard the Super Twin which Matt (with Mark's permission) set about tweaking with some subtle changes to the rocker and outline. The aim was to create a modern single to double concave, small wave weapon with a forgiving and user friendly nature. By far the biggest and most noticeable change was to the entry rocker which was significantly lowered and the nose, tail-block and overall width were widened. These initial changes massively improved the glide, an essential attribute for a board that needs to perform in gutless mush. Matt stuck with MR's proven 'down soft rails' and modern tail rocker so the Cali Fish still turns on a dime and performs in 'pockety' beach-break waves.

The California Twin is a curvy little Fish; flat where it needs to be for paddle speed and glide and totally capable of 'shortboard-esque' snaps in the pocket.

Get the sizing right and you'll fall in love with this little fish in the blink of an eye. If you rip and are in need of a groveller, the Cali Fish ticks all the boxes. If you're looking for a forgiving shortboard as an intermediate or an older rider, or you just don't get in as often as you'd like or get the quality waves some are blessed with...the California Twin has got your name on the stringer!

what a drive!!!! this is my New Fav board
As always Boardshop service is top class in terms of timing, follow up, shipping and postal service proof packaging : )

the California Twin is amazing
and obviously, Sir Mark Richards doesn’t disappoint
Floats and paddles like my fish but doesn’t feels any less performant than a performance short board.

Only surfed it in quality 4 to 5 feet but it feels it can take bigger surf with the appropriate fin set up.

thank you MR

Simply the best
What can I say! Every time I deal with the Boardshop you get service that is second to none! In addition the guys have the most incredible knowledge about all of their boards and always help you make the right choice. This board is coming to the Maldives with me and I know it’s going to fit the bill spot on.

Best ever?
This is an 18-month review, after a lot of use. My board is a 5’9”/33.5L; I’m 80kg and a reasonable surfer: not great, not terrible. It’s a genius board. It paddles and catches waves better than my 37-litre classic twinnie, makes steep drops simple, and has great control in powerful surf. I’m also pretty sure it’s the fastest board I’ve ever had. In anything with a little power from waist-high up, this is the go every time. The only surf it struggles with is small, weak waves - but who cares about that?

Excellent small wave board
Only surfed it a few times so far but seems really good, fast, loose and easy to paddle. I was torn between the 5'7" and 5'8", went for 5'7". Got the recommended MR fins with trailer and so far so very good.

Great board, sized right for what you want
First session on this board, I was really disappointed. Second session, loved it.

The difference was the waves. The first session was on a falling tide at Woolacombe: funky waves without much power, about waist high. I struggled to paddle, seemed to be catching waves late, couldn’t get my feet in the right place. Second session, low tide rising at pretty much the same spot, the waves had picked up to chest/head high, and had a lot more shape and push. My feet seemed to place better and I did what felt like my best turn on a surfboard (after 30+ years of board riding...).

My weight’s 80kg and I bought the 5’9”/33.5L model. I thought the flat rocker would compensate for the relatively low volume (for me: my normal size is about 35L). I’m not sure it really does. Should I have gone bigger, though? Would the trade-off for easier paddling and catching weaker waves have been not making that magic turn? Not sure. The 5’11” might have been a better allrounder, but marginally worse in good waves. Until Boardshop give me a 5’11” for back-to-back testing at the Wave Ranch, I don’t suppose I’ll find out for sure.

I’m really pleased with the board, and I think however you size it this is a great shape. Manufacturing quality seems to be good, too.

Pure joy!
Perfect board for not so young chaps like me (44 years old). Paddles greatly, as I can pester the young guns catching hundreds of waves. Enough foam in the right places and this board is great in the pocket as well as in the flat faces. Stoked with my new board!
