Description

Who remembers the total craziness of the original Sweet Potato, about a million litres all crammed into a 5' 4" surfboard! Still remember how much we laughed when we first saw it, but you know what it worked! Dan Mann's updated version has landed, we present you the all new Firewire Sweet Potato in the excellent Helium construction.

This new version keeps the DNA of the original - heaps of volume in small sizes but it also incorporates some different features. The big round tail has gone and is replaced with a pulled in swallow to give more control, the bottom shape is altered as well to give the board a much more responsive feel. The key feature though is the crazy double barrel concave, this generates plenty of lift and therefore speed which is what makes this board so brilliant. Essentially the new Sweet Potato replaces your longboard if thats what you choose to ride in smaller gutless waves.

If you are looking for a groveler, or just a board to deal with weaker waves in the knee to shoulder high range the Sweet Potato has you covered, epic paddling, early wave entry, bags of speed and glide and you can also get it on a rail, whats not to like? This board can work for all and any skill level, if you're at the lower end go bigger and it'll give you hours of fun, if a better surfer then obviously go smaller, its a board for everyone.

Super happy that Firewire opted to make this board in the Helium tech, Helium tech is all about making an already amazing set of construction options even better. Its lighter, more durable than regular PU boards and thus far is proving a way more robust than Firewire's LFT construction. High Density Aerospace Composite Deck Skins and a new Paulownia/Balsa mix on the rails gives a faster flex response. Having surfed the tech in a couple of different models it does feel light but the speed through a stiffer feel and responsiveness is exceptional, Helium is here to stay.

Firewire surfboards are more durable than other surfboard manufacturing processes, and for 90% of surfers they will improve your surfing. Firewire is pushing the limits of applying new technology and innovation to surfboard design and always has an eye on the environmental impact of what they do, they truly are different to the other board companies out there. Firewire have come a long way since the early boards and the range of shapes and tech just gets better and better. A big chunk of the boards in the range are perfectly suited to the waves that 90% of us surf on a regular basis so if you haven't already give them a try.

The staff here have surfed pretty much every surfboard in the Firewire range at some time or another and we speak to surfers from all over the world and get their feedback on how the boards perform in all sorts of conditions so we're well placed to talk about all aspects of Firewire surfboards. We're happy to consider trading in your old board against a new Firewire, so If you have any questions about this we'd be delighted to answer them and advise on any potential board choices or enquiries you might have, just drop us an email to info@boardshop.co.uk or call us on 0044 (0) 1243 674250.

A micro-longboard that turns on a dime!
The sweet potato is an amazing groveller. I’ve surfed it in 1-3ft windslop and glassy conditions and it’s impressive in both. It paddles well and catches waves super easily, in fact it feels like a turbo kicks in when you catch a wave, even when the waves are fat and slow.

It pivots really well for such a wide board but understandably does takes a bit of effort to get it on a rail in bigger waves; to be honest you’d be better off on a different board at that point but it’s great in the small stuff.

It’s also surprising how much it glides like a longboard; the extra volume through the domed deck helped me get through some flat sections and into some shorey-reformers that my other boards would never have made and when you need to, it will whip round to make tight turns really quickly.

I tried it as a quad and a thruster and preferred the latter, as the board is already really fast so the extra control felt better for me.

I got the 5’6. I’m 74kg, reasonable fitness level and felt like I had the right volume under me.

Overall super impressive.

6’0’’ Sweet Potato - It’s massive!
First impressions on unwrapping were that it’s a chunky beast. It’s massive. Thicker than I imagined. My partner said the same, which boosted my ego until I realised she was talking about my new board. However, it’s supposed to be. Plenty of float and easy to paddle. Have only used in weak knee biters, and think it may be too much for a larger more powerful set. But again, that’s what it is for.

In terms of aesthetics - the lines were more navy blue than black and the finish between the wood/paint and the white board were not the best. But still looks amazing when paired with some bamboo and glass futures and mango coloured leash.

Perfect aid for a 5’11, 85kg, not as fit as he was, bloke who last surfed 15 years ago. The mind knows what I need to do, the body struggles to action!

Now looking to replace my yellowed and repaired custom 20 year old JP Liquid Solutions fish(ish) board with another smaller and less chunky FireWire. Then again, it will still be used out of nostalgia.

Buy one !
Just under 6ft and weigh around 84kg on a good day.

Local surf is the south coast, Witterings. I guess I'm the very early stages of intermediate and a slow learner ! After much deliberation and the continued solid advice from the board shop team, I picked up a 6 2 sweet potato and took it out in some very ropey conditions this am: 5 second intervals, small waves, messy, blustery......I caught waves..... I loved it.

You can kind of just point and take off into them with ease despite conditions.

I was worried about the drop from my 7 10 and 7 2 mid lengths (and a longboard I have), not re the volume of it, but the significant drop in length, but it was no issue at all. It's also cool to be able to be on something where I can learn/improve turns with seemingly relative ease.

I'm really stoked about the fact that with it, I can now get out much more frequently; consistently presented by very average conditions (still love it!) on the south coast, ready for those rarer windows we get when it all comes together!

In summary, if like me the south coast is your go to and you are more used to just making the most of it, I now don't understand why I didn't have a board like this until now! it's an obvious quiver addition and is super forgiving.

Great
Love this board . Ive been surfing 53 years on stand up boards and started in 63 on the plywood belly boards . Ive been riding 7'6"s , CC mini mal ,Glydra, crowd killer, a m13 Al Merrick and the transition to the sweet potato for small surf was easy , agreat little board that flies as soon as it hits a bit of vertical face and has enough in it to glide thru the fat sections, its so manouverable !! Small Wave Magic
I’m an average surfer of middle age (45), 5’9” and 65kg. Bought 5’4” following advice from Matt. Have ridden the board twice so far in weak 1-3ft waves at Freshwater West and can confirm all other reviews. This board is great!!
It paddles and catches waves like a dream and is super-forgiving to ride. If you want small wave fun with short board manuverability this is the board for you.
Throw away you roof rack and buy one!

Absolutely stoked, I love this board
I'm 5'7@~70kg, fairly fit progressing beginner, coming from an 8'0 log with over 70 liters. What a change! My coach was a little bit skeptical, but after 3 sessions on sub-par conditions I started figuring out how the board works.

Paddling is easy and late take-offs feel effortlessly. The board seems to prefer glassy conditions or at least not very choppy ones. I surfed it from ankle/knee high to head high and it works extremely well, I just swap from quad to thruster whenever it gets bigger and waves are better.

I think 1-2ft extremely poor conditions are doable if you're a better paddler than I am, but currently they're out of my range as they require the surfer to do a lot of work.

The board feels really alive and skate-y, someone may not like it but I think is great. It's magical, it generates speed on its own and with few pumps you just fly through sections. Currently is my daily driver and I can't see myself surfing anything else but my Sweet Potato. Easy 5 star for me.

Thanks to Boardshop for the amazing service and top quality deliver. Love you guys!

Where do I start… What a board! What a shop!
Firstly, the service from Boardshop has been outstanding, shout to Matt for all his time and advise. Nothing was too much trouble, even the stupid questions! Super quick replies on email.
Slight issue with the board when received (not their fault), which was sorted within 24hrs, with no issues at all – hats off to the team on their service. I won’t buy from anywhere else from now on.

The board itself is stunning, slightly wider as per it’s design, with the buoyancy to match!
First ride in very messy December Welsh waves, however still possible to ride and catch something. Looking forward to really pushing the board as it’s been designed to be used & enjoyed!

Thanks again!

Absolutely love it!
Surfing sub par conditions a lot I have tried more than a few grovellers in the past years. I used to own the first version of the SP long ago and the only reason I let it go was the fact that I simply chose the wrong size. I had the 5´8 which was the ultimate wave catcher but in the end way too floaty (me being 6´2, about 80kgs). So when the new version came out I knew I had to try it. Ian encouraged me to go with the 5´6, the shortest board I have ever ridden, and was (as always) spot on with his sizing. It gets you in waves very easy and still doesn’t feel like a barn door.
I tried it in waist high and smaller North Sea slop and it delivered just what I wanted. Great board for small and weak conditions, feels like standing on a skateboard with such a short board under the feet, just pure fun. I was the only one out without a longboard and can’t complain about my wave count in any way.
Getting closer to the absolutely lower end of the wave spectrum there will be a point when you can’t trick physics any more and the board ist simply too short. But until you get there the SP will give you all the fun without having to surf a longboard. Absolutely love it!

Feels super fun
I'm 5'10/ 65kg, and went for the 5'8 as I'm a progressing beginner coming off 7'8 & 6'6. I've found it fun so far, way more playful than the other 2 I've tried. It wants to move and you can feel the control you have. Paddles well, and I'm sure with fitness it'll be easier to catch the 2-3ft mash we get on the SE.

All-in-all: I'm happy with the sweet potato 2, it's definitely a board I'm going to progress with. May have been a couple of years early/ inches too big - but the impulse to buy couldn't be ignored!

Just my opinion, not really sure I should have an opinion on this, however, that £500 shopping spree would be nice.
