Lost Surfboards 2020

He’s done it again, a range of Lost surfboards that caters for every style of surfing and every level of surfer.

The Lost surfboards range for this year had reached new heights, the variety in shapes, and styles means that there is a Lost surfboard for everyone. The perennial favourites from previous years are still there too, it’s a great combo of the tried and trusted and exciting new shapes.

The existing range of Lost surfboards is awesome, highlights including the unrivalled Puddle Jumper family of boards and mid length flavour Smooth Operator.

Mayhem has added, the Hydra, Sword-Fish, California Twin, Party Crasher, Driver 2.0 and the Rocker Redux , find out more about these boards and a couple of others right here and figure out which one can take your surfing to the next level.

We love what Matt ‘Mayhem’ Biolos does and the way he pushes the limits with board design, he never sits back, he’s always looking to improve current models and he always introduces new boards that add something different to what is already covered

Don’t forget at Boardshop we have the custom board builder which allows you to create your next Lost Surfboard exactly how you would like it, we can’t stock every board in every size so if we don’t have what you need contact us or use the builder.

Sword-Fish

Lost Swordfish

The SWORD-FISH is precisely as the name implies:  A furiously fast Pelagic fish, aggressive, with a wide powerful tail, and a long-pointed nose. Designed at the request of (and direction from) Kolohe Andino, as an extension of his favourite RNF-Retro.

Kolohe surfed his little neon RNF-Retro better than I’d ever seen anyone surf any fish in small Trestles waves. Inspired, yet not satisfied, he came to me wanting to create something even better.

With the gauntlet laid, we went to work and to do just that. Starting with Kolohe’s magic little 5’6” RNF-Retro we added 3” of length, by extending the nose, pulling it in and added some gradual nose rocker.  We also narrowed the entire board a bit and pulled the tail in just slightly, retaining the double side-cut ”Pelagic” outline.

We kept the tail rocker and bottom curves the same but blended the rails a bit more.

Rocket Redux

Lost Rocket Redux

The Lost Rocket Redux surfboard is a lot of fun and is going to attract a broad church of surfers of differing abilities and styles.

The original Rocket was an accidental discovery born from a broken blank and Shane Beschen's desire to create a rip-stick for his freakishly capable son Noah.

The board was finished and of course Shane had to give it a blast. To say he was impressed is an understatement, he took the board back to Mayhem HQ for some refinements and yet another 'happy accident', magic surfboard was introduced to the Lost line-up.

"As we started fine tuning and building them for the boys, we knew were had something special. Fast forward a year, and the 2009 video release of “5’5 Redux”. The Rocket was a star of the show, ridden by a parade of guest rippers cutting loose on the little weapon. From Bros to Pros, The Rocket was soon a global hit, being enjoyed by surfers of all shapes, sizes and skill sets.

Now, more than a decade after its initial release, the Rocket returns. A re-incarnated Redux for the new generation to enjoy another run of fun… The Rocket Redux." - Matt Biolos.

The Rocket Redux ridden in the longer lengths is going to make a really usable board for those newer to shortboarding, taking advantage of its low entry rocker and generous outline.

In the shorter lengths the intermediate and advanced riders are going to love the RR with its exaggerated tail curve and signature 'hooked' diamond Rocket tail designed to bite when surfing from the back foot.

The low entry rocker accelerates the board down the line and the "hyper extended" tail curve delivers precise turning in average to good conditions and will illuminate those average days at your local beach break. Thigh to chest high would be the Rocket Redux's happy place but the RR's ability in larger surf was well documented in the Lost movie 5’5" Redux.

The all new Rocket Redux definitely stays true to the original Rocket but has been primed for a serious performance boost with some key refinements; refined rail curves and cleaned up rail lines add extra horsepower to this Rocket Redux.

Hydra

Lost Hydra

The Hydra is, in our humble opinion going to be the best selling Lost board of this year, it’s an absolute cracker.

The Hydra incorporates many proven features from the Lost back catalogue of small wave fish and sized down hybrids like the Puddle Jumper, Bottom Feeder, Pelagic and more recently the RNF Retro. The outline is close to a traditional fish (apart from the tail!) and the rocker as you'd expect is low for paddle speed and early wave entry.

The most noticeable design details which set the Hydra apart from the myriad of fish out there are the double concave, chined "Hydra Hull" and the "Split Diamond" tail.

Matt explains the distinctive bottom contours - "A design I first learned from Jim Fuller in the mid '80's and is featured in our classic Bottom Feeder Model. A similar style of "hull" was designed, popularized and perfected by Bill Stewart as the "Hydro-Hull" for decades.

Like a single concave, it allows the use of more curve through the rocker (which makes proper turning and vertical surfing a lot easier) by cutting through and adding lift and speed.

With very wide boards single concave bottoms easily get sticky and want to stay flat on the face, the chined bevels add release, free up the board from rail to rail and encourage 3D rail surfing, as opposed to simply skating fast on the surface, like so many traditional Fish" - Matt Biolos.

The Hydra's tail is really very clever, incorporating proven characteristics of both Diamond and Swallow tails. The notched-out tail reduces the length of the stringer and thereby minimises the surface area behind your back foot which in turn delivers 'bite' and control to a wide tail surfboard.

The 'Double Diamond' tail is in effect a swallow tail with the corners cut off, which reduces the length of the rail which in turn significantly reduces the turning radius. This tail design allows the rider to carry speed through turns with a tighter arc and without scrubbing too much speed off in the process.

We can't wait to get our hands on this stunning (it really is very nice to look at!) small wave weapon, it looks like the best possible blend of traditional fish and contemporary performance groveler, to light-up those small summer days when its waist high and glassy.

The Lost Hydra will electrify anything from knee high windy chop to perfectly groomed shoulder high walls and the odd head high sesh at a push!

Mayhem's latest small wave offering is an inclusive craft; appealing to intermediates looking for a stable and easy paddling summer ride and the rippers and freaks are going to love the 'crowd pleasing' performance the Hydra has dialled in.

Driver 2.0

Lost Driver 2.0

The Driver 2.0 is the result of some rigorous testing and fine tuning by Lost's star spangled pro team; specifically, Kolohe Andino, Griffin Colapinto, Carissa Moore and young gun Caroline Marks. The Driver 2.0 directly reflects the teams requirements for the very latest needs of a performance surfer competing at the top tier.

Over the last couple of years the Driver has been subject to almost constant refinement on a monthly basis in an attempt to keep up with the evolvement of modern competition, performance surfing.

Dozens of boards have been tweaked and fine-tuned benefiting not only the team riders but these improvements trickle down to the average Joe's and Jane's wanting the best they can get for their hard earned cash.

The latest refinements include a slightly more relaxed entry rocker with the "no flip tip" delivering more glide and speed out the gate with no need to pump and the ability to carry speed through drawn-out turns.

The nose has been slightly widened in the from 18" for some front foot drive and also gives a stable platform for landing reverse and nailing those 'tail wafts'. A bit more volume has been hidden through the centre with a pronounced 'vee' deck but still maintaining sensitive rails and does in no way feel corky.

The rails are thinner but boxier through the tail for quick heel to toe transitions and added hold when slicing through high speed turns. The rail rocker has been slightly increased which creates more curve and a deeper concave under the back foot, delivering increased 'pop' and much better performance off the tail.

Overall the Driver 2.0 benefits from a little extra volume and slightly more generous dimensions giving the pros more glide and momentum and the Bros get to ride a forgiving shortboard the same as their idols.

Since its inception the Driver 2.0 has gone on to win the Stab in the Dark All Stars "blind tasting" with Mick Fanning stating that he thought it the best Mayhem shape of all time!!

Smooth Operator

Lost Smooth Operator

We’ve been waiting for this for a while, we spotted it on Matt’s Instagram feedback in October last year, it was a board that he’d designed and built for his daughter but we really liked the look of it – we contacted him to get some made straight away but we had to wait for the official launch, here we are almost 6 months later, it’s been worth the wait!

High volume, lowered rail line, and a 4 + 1 fin set up make this board an absolute fun machine.

The Smooth Operator is basically a classic mid-length. This area of surfboard design is on fire right now with good reason, they are fun to surf!

Recently Biolos developed the Crowd Killer last year to serve this market but that board turned out to be a big shortboard basically and kind of missed the point it did not have the effortless glide and horizontal trim of a classic mid length.

The Smooth Operator is a far truer version of this genre of board, lowered entry rocker, forward wide point and steady thickness throughout.

The nose and tail measure the same width at both 12” and 24” and it’s this that makes it paddle and glide like nothing else that’s come out of the Lost set up. It’s a winner, apparently it turns too!

California Twin

Lost California Twin

The Lost California Twin surfboard is a long-awaited collaboration between Matt 'Mayhem' Biolos and Mark Richards.

These two legends of the surf-world have joined forces to produce the perfect modern twin + trailer fish with MR's classic lines and a large injection of Mayhem's small wave magic.

The start point was MR's best selling modern shortboard the Super Twin which Matt (with Mark's permission) set about tweaking with some subtle changes to the rocker and outline.

The aim was to create a modern single to double concave, small wave weapon with a forgiving and user friendly nature. By far the biggest and most noticeable change was to the entry rocker which was significantly lowered and the nose, tail-block and overall width were widened.

These initial changes massively improved the glide, an essential attribute for a board that needs to perform in gutless mush. Matt stuck with MR's proven 'down soft rails' and modern tail rocker so the Cali Fish still turns on a dime and performs in 'pockety' beach-break waves.

The California Twin is a curvy little Fish; flat where it needs to be for paddle speed and glide and totally capable of 'shortboard-esque' snaps in the pocket.

Get the sizing right and you'll fall in love with this little fish in the blink of an eye. If you rip and are in need of a groveler, the Cali Fish ticks all the boxes.

If you're looking for a forgiving shortboard as an intermediate or an older rider, or you just don't get in as often as you'd like or get the quality waves some are blessed with...the California Twin has got your name on the stringer!

Party Crasher

Lost Party Crasher

The Party Crasher is a chopped down, volume-up spin off of the popular Crowd Killer, with a nod to the stylish Smooth Operator, but without forgetting the performance and manoeuvrability of our shorter hybrids like the Puddle Jumper series, thus furthering our adventures into the ego free fun of Mid-length Mayhem.

Looking for a happy medium between the typical hybrids (which are traditionally ridden at, or even well below your own height) and the Mid-length Mayhem models, the Party Crasher was designed to bridge the considerable size gap.

A magic Unicorn that glides and paddles like the longer boards, but more manoeuvrable and easier to travel with, like the smaller boards.

The Party Crasher exists to do just that: Crash any spot and shark around the line up like an un-wanted guest, feasting on typical surf like an open bar or free buffet.

Biolos started with his favourite 7’2” Crowd Killer Round, he chopped 6” off of the tail and made a hard diamond, which further shortens the rail line and enables quicker, more radical, turns. He then whacked 2” off the nose allowing the nose rocker to settle lower and to carry more width forward, lending glide and early entry into waves.

The generous tail rocker purposely remains the same, but when squeezed into the shorter board allows it to really fit into tight pockets and short, average broken up beach breaks. It doesn’t need a lot of room to turn.

The Party Crasher retains the Crowd Killer’s relatively low rail volume, and continuous curve outline, which keeps it catch free and forgiving.

It features a deeper, more souped-up and radical, single to double concave bottom. The deeper concave adds lift and spark in smaller surf, and increase the rail line rocker, allowing more vertical and tight-radius-turning.

Crash any line up with confidence on this wave catching, yet surprisingly nimble and manoeuvrable, machine. It’s an age appropriate board, that allows more mature surfers to navigate crowded line ups and hit wave quota, without the typical reduction in performance when going with a longer, higher volume board.

Meant to be ridden 4”-8” shorter than a Crowd Killer/Smooth Operator, or 4”-8” longer than our range of Puddle Jumper styles, short Hybrids, but with similar width and thickness to all.
