Description

When we first saw this board the stoke was high amongst all the team here, the Pukas Balloon reminded us of boards that have gone before and everyone wanted to surf it straight away.

What Pukas have created here takes the best parts of the Channel Island Biscuit, the Lost Bean Bag and the Pukas Resin Cake and melds it into a supreme groveler thats going to be hard to get off! The Balloon is suited to waves up to head high when conditions are weaker and the waves slower, the innovative design delivers great paddle power for these conditions, instant speed and most importantly the ability to get it on a rail.

The soft curvy outline makes for smooth transitions, the width through the middle of the board and the well hidden volume gives real paddle power and pretty much gurarantees a high wave count. The disc like shape feels great under the arm, you can almost feel how this board will surf. If you want to have fun and actually surf when its sub prime conditions and you don't want a longboard then look no further. The bottom set up features a V entry running into gentle single concave and then a deeper double concave just ahead of the fins. The rails carry some foam but don't feel chunky. The concave set up gives you quick acceleration and the ability to maintain speed through flatter sections and that rail set up makes initiating turns very straightforward. The rocker line is described by David Santos, the shaper as 'lazy'...its pretty flat but there is enough lift in the tail and nose to keep it lively.

The Pukas Balloon surfboard is a board that anyone from ripper to progressing intermediate can surf - go smaller to boost performance and size it up for a more stable ride that will still let you work on turns. Aim for 3-4" shorter than yourt standard daily board or match to the conditions you'll use it in. Fin wise the boards is set up with a 5 fin option, it'll work as a quad or twin plus trailer ideally to give you that boost of speed you'll want in weaker waves.

As always we're stoked to partner with Pukas on this cracking little board, custom options are available on our board builder and we're on hand for advice on sizing or anything else you might need.

Great board for UK waves
Love this new board. Only had it a few weeks but I knew from the first session that it was great. The board is fast and easy to turn. I have found it a lot easier to get out in front of sections when the waves are weaker. Took it on a week long trip to northern Spain, waves were 3-4ft every day and it worked great. For the UK were the waves aren't super powerful it is perfect.

I am 180cm and 77kg, definitley not a ripper more of a weekend surfer, I bought the Balloon in size 5'8. I was worried this would be too short but after a call with the Boardshop team they reassured me it would be ok. It was a good choice, it is really easy to paddle and I have found it easy to get into waves.

I have enjoyed it most as a thruster, the quad was also fun, defintiely faster but harder to turn.

When surfing at home in the UK I think it is either going to have to be very small or absolutley pumping to persuade me to not take this board out.

A genuine U.K wave board for 90% of the conditions we face ...
Well… what can I say, I never thought I’d click with a board so fast. The Balloon feels familiar and reliable, but also exciting and intriguing at the same time which makes you want to experiment with your surfing.

For reference I'm 5' 9 and currently sitting around 82-83kg and typically ride a 7' 4 Thick Lizzy and a 6' 4 Pukas Space Oddity ...

Volume distribution is perfect, generous under the chest but not noticeable when up and riding, those low performance rails are special and really allow you to engage and slice through the wave. The deep concave through the fins offers so much release but so manageable at the same time. I’ve been running it as a thruster but super keen to try it as a quad and even twin + trailer. Wave range is crazy considering how much volume is hidden in the board, I’ve genuinely surfed this board in subpar knee high waves on the South Coast (if you know, you know!) and chest high days at home and in Cornwall and feels solid but playful. Super excited on this one and I can already tell its going to be a quiver killer for me … Stoked!

You see a lot of boards out there which designed/ marketed to the Small - Head high days but most of it is rubbish, I've been lucky enough to surf this ahead of the launch and really test it out and I can say from my experience with a lot of boards that this is true to that statement, size it smaller than you think, trust the board and trust the design, it will do a lot of heavy lifting, but it does scale up well too ....

A winner in my book
