The Phipps Caviar surfboard follows in the wake of the extraordinarily successful and completely versatile One Bad Egg.

The Caviar is a shortened version of the OBE with a full nose and a wide fish tail. Comfortable in a wide array of conditions, the Caviar paddles with speed (nice flat rocker) and catches small and sloppy waves with ease and yet still has enough composure in sizeable conditions in the 6' range.

This clever little board looks a great option for a wide range of riders; anyone not blessed with pristine overhead surf, competent surfers who get limited wave time, older guys and girls who lack a little fitness and a great option for the first-time shortboarder.

First impressions after a couple of tester sessions is very positive. Paddling is super-smooth and the Caviar seems to accelerate and drive well through chop. You'll glide over flat and weak sections thanks to the wider overall outline and single into double concave. A standard thruster fin set worked very well and I reckon a twin + trailer would be a lot of fun on a nice clean open face.

Mark Phipps has been 'mowing foam' for nearly as long as he's been surfing. He started shaping and first picked up a planer under the wing and careful guidance of Wayne Lynch and Greg Brown in the famous Gash factory. Mark now divides his time between his home town of Point Lonsdale in Victoria, Australia and France. This allows him to make the very best of the surf in both locations, keep his finger on the "surf" pulse and keep in touch with the travelling pros who love his unique custom made shortboards.
