Description

Who remembers the total craziness of the original Sweet Potato, about a million litres all crammed into a 5' 4" surfboard! Still remember how much we laughed when we first saw it, but you know what, it worked! Dan Mann's updated version has landed, we present you the all new Firewire Sweet Potato in the excellent Helium construction with a new look for 2026.

This new version keeps the DNA of the original - heaps of volume in small sizes but it also incorporates some different features. The big round tail has gone and is replaced with a pulled in swallow to give more control, the bottom shape is altered as well to give the board a much more responsive feel. The key feature though is the crazy double barrel concave, this generates plenty of lift and therefore speed which is what makes this board so brilliant. Essentially the new Sweet Potato replaces your longboard if that's what you choose to ride in smaller gutless waves.

If you are looking for a groveler, or just a board to deal with weaker waves in the knee to shoulder high range the Sweet Potato has you covered, epic paddling, early wave entry, bags of speed and glide and you can also get it on a rail, what's not to like? This board can work for all and any skill level, if you're at the lower end go bigger and it'll give you hours of fun, if a better surfer then obviously go smaller, its a board for everyone.

Super happy that Firewire opted to make this board in the Helium tech, Helium tech is all about making an already amazing set of construction options even better. Its lighter, more durable than regular PU boards and thus far is proving a way more robust than Firewire's LFT construction. High Density Aerospace Composite Deck Skins and a new Paulownia/Balsa mix on the rails gives a faster flex response. Having surfed the tech in a couple of different models it does feel light but the speed through a stiffer feel and responsiveness is exceptional, Helium is here to stay.

Firewire surfboards are more durable than other surfboard manufacturing processes, and for 90% of surfers they will improve your surfing. Firewire is pushing the limits of applying new technology and innovation to surfboard design and always has an eye on the environmental impact of what they do, they truly are different to the other board companies out there. Firewire have come a long way since the early boards and the range of shapes and tech just gets better and better. A big chunk of the boards in the range are perfectly suited to the waves that 90% of us surf on a regular basis so if you haven't already give them a try.

The staff here have surfed pretty much every surfboard in the Firewire range at some time or another and we speak to surfers from all over the world and get their feedback on how the boards perform in all sorts of conditions so we're well placed to talk about all aspects of Firewire surfboards. We're happy to consider trading in your old board against a new Firewire, so If you have any questions about this we'd be delighted to answer them and advise on any potential board choices or enquiries you might have, just drop us an email to [email protected] or call us on 0044 (0) 1243 674250.

The short longboard
Doubled my wave count immediately. Sets up lovely as a 2+1. First surf in knee high mush but still catching some! Mad but seriously fun board!

5'8 SP Unreal volume
Haven't really tried the board properly, but looks and feels unreal! SOO much volume and the width is mental!
Boardshop were amazing to deal with, very fast answering questions and were a delight to deal with! The board arrived in perfect condition and very well packed!
Won't be getting my boards from anywhere else from now on!

6’0’’ Sweet Potato - It’s massive!
First impressions on unwrapping were that it’s a chunky beast. It’s massive. Thicker than I imagined. My partner said the same, which boosted my ego until I realised she was talking about my new board. However, it’s supposed to be. Plenty of float and easy to paddle. Have only used in weak knee biters, and think it may be too much for a larger more powerful set. But again, that’s what it is for.

In terms of aesthetics - the lines were more navy blue than black and the finish between the wood/paint and the white board were not the best. But still looks amazing when paired with some bamboo and glass futures and mango coloured leash.

Perfect aid for a 5’11, 85kg, not as fit as he was, bloke who last surfed 15 years ago. The mind knows what I need to do, the body struggles to action!

Now looking to replace my yellowed and repaired custom 20 year old JP Liquid Solutions fish(ish) board with another smaller and less chunky FireWire. Then again, it will still be used out of nostalgia.

Buy one !
Just under 6ft and weigh around 84kg on a good day.

Local surf is the south coast, Witterings. I guess I'm the very early stages of intermediate and a slow learner ! After much deliberation and the continued solid advice from the board shop team, I picked up a 6 2 sweet potato and took it out in some very ropey conditions this am: 5 second intervals, small waves, messy, blustery......I caught waves..... I loved it.

You can kind of just point and take off into them with ease despite conditions.

I was worried about the drop from my 7 10 and 7 2 mid lengths (and a longboard I have), not re the volume of it, but the significant drop in length, but it was no issue at all. It's also cool to be able to be on something where I can learn/improve turns with seemingly relative ease.

I'm really stoked about the fact that with it, I can now get out much more frequently; consistently presented by very average conditions (still love it!) on the south coast, ready for those rarer windows we get when it all comes together!

In summary, if like me the south coast is your go to and you are more used to just making the most of it, I now don't understand why I didn't have a board like this until now! it's an obvious quiver addition and is super forgiving.

Great
Love this board . Ive been surfing 53 years on stand up boards and started in 63 on the plywood belly boards . Ive been riding 7'6"s , CC mini mal ,Glydra, crowd killer, a m13 Al Merrick and the transition to the sweet potato for small surf was easy , agreat little board that flies as soon as it hits a bit of vertical face and has enough in it to glide thru the fat sections, its so manouverable !! Absolutely love it!
Surfing sub par conditions a lot I have tried more than a few grovellers in the past years. I used to own the first version of the SP long ago and the only reason I let it go was the fact that I simply chose the wrong size. I had the 5´8 which was the ultimate wave catcher but in the end way too floaty (me being 6´2, about 80kgs). So when the new version came out I knew I had to try it. Ian encouraged me to go with the 5´6, the shortest board I have ever ridden, and was (as always) spot on with his sizing. It gets you in waves very easy and still doesn’t feel like a barn door.
I tried it in waist high and smaller North Sea slop and it delivered just what I wanted. Great board for small and weak conditions, feels like standing on a skateboard with such a short board under the feet, just pure fun. I was the only one out without a longboard and can’t complain about my wave count in any way.
Getting closer to the absolutely lower end of the wave spectrum there will be a point when you can’t trick physics any more and the board ist simply too short. But until you get there the SP will give you all the fun without having to surf a longboard. Absolutely love it!
