Description

Rob Machado's hotly anticipated Firewire Helium Seaside has landed.

Whilst absolutely loving the skatey feel of his Go Fish over the last couple of years, Rob was interested in fine-tuning the board to achieve a little more performance for more carves, tighter turns and some composure in the tube.

Rather than 'throw the baby out with the bath water', Rob set about refining his beloved Go Fish into a 'ripper' where the Go Fish remains a more 'cruisey' and fun surfboard.

The tail on the Seaside has less area, the tips of the swallow have been narrowed and the nose pulled in creating more curve and a board that fits the pocket and turns tighter in the critical part of the wave.

The Seaside is designed as a quad and has its concaves and bottom contours based around that...so don't ask if there will be a five fin or thruster option...it's a quad period! Rob said, "I actually redesigned the entire concave setup that I've been using in the Moonbeam and go Fish, and did it with a quad setup in mind so that it all works together with the new fin set (coming soon from Futures and FCS!)".

Rob named the 'Seaside' after his home break Seaside Reef, Cardiff CA. The board is designed to excel in beach breaks, point breaks. Rob decided on Firewire's Helium construction for the Seaside to keep it nice and lightweight, super-responsive and really durable and ideal for smaller and less punchy conditions.

Firewire’s Helium tech is all about making an already amazing set of construction options even better. Its lighter, more durable than regular PU boards and thus far is proving a little more robust than Firewire's LFT construction. High Density Aerospace Composite Deck Skins and a new Paulownia/Balsa mix on the rails gives a faster flex response. Having surfed the tech in a couple of different models it does feel light but the speed through a stiffer feel and responsiveness is exceptional, Helium is here to stay.

Firewire surfboards are more durable than other surfboard manufacturing processes, and for 90% of surfers they will improve your surfing. Firewire is pushing the limits of applying new technology and innovation to surfboard design and always has an eye on the environmental impact of what they do, they truly are different to the other board companies out there. Firewire have come a long way since the early boards and the range of shapes and tech just gets better and better. A big chunk of the boards in the range are perfectly suited to the waves that 90% of us surf on a regular basis so if you haven't already give them a try.

The staff here have surfed pretty much every surfboard in the Firewire range at some time or another and we speak to surfers from all over the world and get their feedback on how the boards perform in all sorts of conditions so we're well placed to talk about all aspects of Firewire surfboards. We're happy to consider trading in your old board against a new Firewire, so If you have any questions about this we'd be delighted to answer them and advise on any potential board choices or enquiries you might have, just drop us an email to info@boardshop.co.uk or call us on 0044 (0) 1243 674250.

Superb Board
I've taken it out over 15 times now and the board is so much fun. Just like all the reviews you will find, its fast, paddles great and goes well in a variety of conditions. Go with the Machado quad fin set, it works great.

Needless to say I'm so happy with the purchase!

Five feet eight inches of pure dreamstick!
Holy Moly!
I've only had this board ten days and normally when I purchase a board it goes flat for two weeks, as we all know, but this board is so magical that it waived all that nonsense and I was in the water half hour after unwrapping it. I immediately nabbed five sessions in 2-3ft onshore, then four clean little offshore parties, two of which were technically way too small for a 6,1", 85kg man to be out there pumping a 5,8 shortboard. In the first week I've already enjoyed three of my five best ever waves at home... Its proper dreamy.
I normally ride a 7ft, 50lt foamie (highlight: glide) in anything under 1 1/2ft or if feeling flowy, a tiny little 5,4, 32lt mini-egg (highlight: really tight backside rail-grabs) in 1-3ft fun waves and a 5,8, 35lt foamie fish (highlight: very fast all-rounder) in anything bigger. I sold my only PU shortboard as I live on the south coast! Apart from a little overlap with the 7ft foamie in very very little surf this board has completely destroyed my quiver! Our home is now littered with redundant, pretty pastel-shaded foamies!
Basically, the tail is knife-thin and ridiculously responsive, there is dark witchcraft going on underneath with an aggressive double-concave and huge lips on the under-rail edge, and most of the volume appears to be under the chest so you get a proper, duck-divable performance shortboard that paddles like a groveller, and the epoxy/helium lifts the board a little more so from the middle of the board it glides too. Its also the fastest thing I've ever stood on, which either gets you through the mush and into the next section in rubbish surf or forces you to highline and cutback in better waves; yes please to both!
I love it so much it hurts. I may seek professional help.
Fins: I've got a set of MRs with two stabilisers at the rear which went very well, and a pair of large, cutaway keels that were also great, but I only managed to resist Mr Machado's Seaside quads for five days, and to be fair they are awesome. Review guru Noel Salas reckons regular quads go well too but also preferred the Seasides.
So what if its bigwig Firewire. So what if its a 'concept board'. Its an amazing surfboard. When I've paid off the 0% finance I'm gonna get another one in 5,6" for the bigger cleaner chunkier days, and for when we're finally allowed to go elsewhere better again, one day soon I hope!
Have I mentioned how insanely beautiful it is too, particularly with the new black (actually dark inky blue) rails and exposed timber in the tail ... HUMANA HUMANA!!!

Amazing
Sick board, flies in everything,
Best when the waves are shoulder high to well overhead! Holds rail in the bigger stuff really well and never feels sketchy it stable as the width is upfront but loose off the tail as it's so pulled in and thin.
I'm 5'11 87kg and the 5'9 is perfect, even with a 5mm suit, boots and gloves.

FireWire Seaside 5’6
Used the Seaside for the first time today. Waves More solid and clean than normal. This board flies! It’s all true. Easy paddle in and great glide and carve, and can still turn hard and sharp. Support and advice from Matt at Boardshop was brilliant so I was confident I was getting the right board to suit me. Thanks Matt.

This board puts a smile on your face.
When the waves are clean it absolutely flies down the line.
I'm 6ft and have just moved down to the 5'4 after riding the 5'7, felt that was just a little bit too big for me.

5'5 Seaside
Purchased the 5'5 seaside. Had a firewire chumlee and i love the helium its so durable and light. Wasn't sure on witch size to pick but im delighted with the 5'5 im 5'7 and weight 75kg. Had it out in thigh high to over head surf and i absolutly love it would highly recommend this board! Easy to duckdive, a good paddler and no problem sinking the rails. The guys at boardshop had it out to me quickly and hassle free, will definetly be coming back to get more boards.

Excellent board
The first thing I noticed about the Seaside is how well it paddles. Overall I really like the Seaside; it's versatile, fun to ride, has a lot of range and I'd guess would suit most intermediate or advanced surfers. From experience, I know the Helium construction is excellent; this would be a great travel board for France, Spain, Canaries or Portugal. (It fits in the back of a rented Fiat 500 with the seats folded down.)

I've given the Seaside four out of five only because I got a California Twin a few months before and I find that more thrilling to ride. The Seaside would have got four and a half if that was possible.
