Firewire Greedy Beaver Surfboard Review

The Firewire Greedy Beaver surfboard absolutely rocks!

Here at Boardshop HQ we’ve had a couple of Beaver’s for a while and there’s been a steady queue of people wanting to have a go, nothing to do with our outstanding surfing but more to do with the massive smiles after having surfed this board.

The secret to the Greedy Beaver is just how easy it is to surf for a huge range of surfing abilities, a complete beginner can jump on a bigger size and be up and riding whilst a more competent surfer can go shorter and have a board that it’s possible to put on a rail and push some big turns. The reason the board works like this is through the combination of design features. First up the front half of the Greedy Beaver is basically a longboard whilst the back half is loaded with performance features. The single to double concave gives lift and speed and the pulled in and thinned out tail gives the surfer the ability to get the board turning, and turn it does! The longboard based front half of the board makes wave catching easy, and when up and riding if you surf it a little further forward you get that delicious longboard glide. The huge sweet spot makes it a forgiving surf but when you load up the tail it really comes to life.

Firewire surfboards are well thought out bits of kit and the Greedy Beaver is no different, you might say it’s based on the Takyama Scorpion but it’s the combination of the unique Timbertek construction and the aforementioned design features that make it as good as it is.

You’ll surf the Greedy in everything from knee high to head high and abit, you’ll be amazed how well it holds in bigger punchier surf and how well it glides in absolute slop. Choosing size is interesting, our initial preconceptions have changed slightly having ridden the thing. Initial thoughts were to have this board as a groveler and so around the usual 35 litres for this kind of board for me, I’m 12 stone and 6’ 1” and very intermediate! This would have put me on the 5’ 10” Greedy Beaver at 34.3 litres, luckily got to try the 5’ 10”, after one surf went and swapped it for the 6’ 0” at 37.5 litres! The thinned out tail really is thinned out and I found that I could easily cope with that extra volume and the added glide was really noticeable between the 2 sizes. I could sink the nose of the 6’ 0” enough to get through the white water so all in all the perfect size. If I had been looking to surf the Beaver in bigger conditions as a kind of one board quiver I would have stuck with the 5’ 10” but as a groveler with a bit extra the 6’ 0” is spot on.

Firewire Greedy Beaver Sizing

The Firewire Beaver is definitely best as a quad in smaller waves and if you’re intending to surf it in bigger conditions you might flip it over to a thrusters set up but really you don’t need too its got plenty of hold and drive in its own right. I used this quad set up FCS II Performer Neo Glass with a pair of FCS II Performer Glass Flex rears.
