Longboard Fins

Longboard surfboard fins are specifically designed to be used with bigger boards where a wider fin base and longer template are needed to give stability and control to maximise the boards performance. Longboard fins slot into a fin box built into the surfboard and have a variety of different fixings.

The traditional longboard fin fitting system is a plate which sits in the track of the fin box and a screw which screws down through the nose of the fin into the box thus holding it in place. In recent years the FCS fin company have developed a screw less system which allows the fins to ‘click’ in and out for the box. These FCS II fins are held in place by a smaller roller built into the fin that slots into the track in the fin box creating a secure yet easily changeable set up. Longboard fins come in a variety of lengths and styles designed to fit the wide variety of longboards out there. Sizes range from 6 inches all the way up to some real monsters at 14 or even 15 inches, the fins have different silhouettes to fit with the board you’re riding, a full on flat log will require a different style of fin to a performance shape.

All the different fin shapes have different performance characteristics some giving more drive, some releasing more easily into turns and some suited for nose riding. All the leading fin brands, FCS, Futures etc have a wide range of fin designs to ensure you get the fin that works best for you. Future fins still use the plate and screw system whilst FCS have pioneered the screw less system, both have their specific advantages and both systems work fine.
