Gerry Lopez Surfboards

Gerry Lopez is one of the most iconic names in surfing, from the legendary images of him surfing Pipeline back in the day to his continued influence now. Gerry grew up in Hawaii in the 1950s and 1960s. He played a part in the shortboard revolution of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Living the dream in the country before it was ever referred to as the North Shore.

Gerry Lopez dedicated his surfing to finding the tube in the early days at the Pipeline, and he then expanded his horizons traveling for surf throughout the world. He ventured to the original surf camp at G-Land, the exotic islands off Sumatra and especially to Bali, Indonesia way before it became a popular surf destination. Gerry has done it all in surfing terms, he’s been on the front cover of every magazine, won contests, surfed everywhere you’d ever want to so it was only natural that the next step would be Lopez surfboards.

Everyone recognises the striped pattern Oxbow colab boards of the 1990s and the range of boards in the surftech construction has continued to grow and flourish. Gerry Lopez surfboard models like the Something Fishy, Little Darlin’ and the Pocket Rocket feature in the excellent surftech surfboard range alongside boards from other greats like Takayama, Stewart etc. Lopez loves to surf this construction, this is what he says “The gloss and polish finish is top shelf, eye-pleasing and seldom seen in our new world of disposable everything. The overall board weight is very light for the durability and strength I found. I rode that Pocket Rocket very hard and kept checking the deck daily for heel dents. I surf with heavy feet because, generally speaking, all my personal boards get the decks smashed especially by my back foot. In the end, after at least 25-30 sessions, I scraped the wax off my red 6-10 and was shocked to find not even one dent. Amazing and, for me, a first!” Recommendations don’t come much higher than that!
