Maurice Cole Surfboards Back to blog By Jake Chapman 30 Jul 2025 Maurice Cole Surfboards: A Legend in Foam and Fibreglass At Boardshop, we don’t throw the word legend around lightly. Then there’s Maurice Cole. A shaping pioneer with a backstory as gnarly as the waves he’s designed boards to ride. When MC popped into Boardshop to launch the Reverse Vee range in 2023 From wild early days in Warrnambool to shaping the boards that helped Tom Curren win a world title, Maurice has changed the game more times than we can count. And now? On top of the models we stock, he’s headed to the UK from Down Under in August 2025, to shape five hand-crafted boards just for us. Yep, FIVE. That’s it. If you want one, don’t sleep on it. He’s a perfectionist, a rebel, a survivor and one of the most naturally gifted surfers Australia has produced. He started out in 1966 with five shillings and a rented log, and ended up creating some of the most iconic board designs in surfing. Maurice and the gang (Wonder if one of them is Ian?) Born in country Victoria, adopted as a baby, Maurice never quite fit the mould. Surfing found him young, and it stuck… hard. By the time he linked up with the Warrnambool Boardriders Club (after telling the local lifesaving captain to get stuffed!), he was already chasing progression. That rebellious streak never left. Style master in the water as well as the shaping bay Later, in the 1990s, he teamed up with Tom Curren and shaped the boards that took Curren from the trials to world champ. One of those boards, a logo-less, yellow-railed stick, became the stuff of surf history. Maurice’s now-famous Reverse Vee bottom contour was born. Tom Curren on... THAT board “He was very genuine with his approach to shaping. I thought his surfboards, even very early, were very good. I used to borrow them, and I remember thinking, Jeez, that’s fantastic! I think they were better than he realised” - Wayne Lynch The Boards - Maurice Cole’s Greatest Hits Every Maurice Cole model we stock reflects his lifelong obsession with design, speed and control. Here are some of his design breakthroughs: • Reverse Vee: Lifts the tail, lowers the rail line. This creates unmatched drive and release through turns. • Fluted Flyers: Channels water through the tail for tighter turns and faster rail engagement. • Hard Edges: Enhances release at high speed. More grip, more speed, less drag. These aren’t just gimmicks, they’re real design breakthroughs that you can feel in the water. Maurice is Coming to the UK – Limited Handshapes Yep, it’s real.
