Lost Tube Pig surfboard 6ft 0 Futures - White
With his informative years spent surfing in West Australia, Taj is no stranger to spending 'time in the shade'. California shaper and long time Taj champion Matt Biolos of Lost Surfboards dreamt and fashioned him the Tube Pig, a board designed to thrive in the serious stuff and constructed to withstand the heavy kickings meted out in these parts. Click on the clip above and make your own mind up if Matt’s shaped a winner
One stand-out in this quiver was a tasty little 5ft 9 x 18.32 x 2.25 with 25 litres volume, with an accentuated rounded pin tail, a narrower than normal "hip" between the feet and a slightly wider than normal nose...it just looked fast and drivey. A pretty normal (for a performance board) rocker was achieved with less concave than usual, but a pleasing rail line with no breaks or curves to interrupt it. There were a couple of other tweaks made that were pretty subtle but proved vital in this little boards prowess in the demanding hollow conditions. The nose is a little thicker than the tail at the 12 and 24" points. The extra volume in the front of the board not only made it a bit less prone to snapping but assisted with paddling and more importantly early wave entry and drive from the front foot.
These subtle differences from your regular truncated step-ups have a helpful bi-product, in that they also make the board an easier paddler for the regular guy wanting a performance board for decent waves with a reduced risk of it snapping on his first miss-timed drop!
When matt finished shaping this prototype he pencilled "Tube Shooter" along the stringer.
After a prolonged period of chunky swell in WA, Matt received a string of "frothing" texts and emails from Taj pronouncing.. "I am not sure if it interests you or not, but this is the best board I have ever ridden in the tube. It's a real Tube Pig. The thickness lets me in early and it knifes into solid tubes better than any shorty would. Paddle power to catch them, but the short little board fits in the curve better than a gun, and still holds in".
And so the Tube Pig was born (or should I say farrowed?), at last a board for anyone looking to charge some big hollow waves on those special days at home or on their travels.
The Tube Pig is designed to be ridden around the same size or a fraction longer than your regular shortboard.
