Description

The Lib tech X Lost Short Round surfboard.

Could surfboard construction Nirvana actually be here?

As surfers we've all dreamed about owning a high performance surfboard with all the positive attributes of a traditional PU board but with none of the inherent fragility that comes with this construction.

Lib Tech are about to change everything you know about surfboards and everything you thought was possible in surfboard construction.

Using 31 brand-new components to the surf industry and calling on 30 years of experience constructing environmentally friendly surfboards, skateboards and snowboards, it was inevitable that Lib Tech were going to produce some remarkable surfboards using this ground breaking, environmentally friendly manufacturing process. Each of the Lib Tech surfboards is handcrafted in the USA with an unwavering focus on building THE toughest high performance surfboards in the world with a commitment to operating in an environmentally responsible manner.

The construction process uses a Nitrogen cell Foam (25-40% recycled content) core for maximum strength and pop. The foam is closed cell, completely waterproof and won't absorb water.
Hexzylon Fibre Foam Skin, this is a smooth, strong, impact and ding resistant layer with the signature Hex pattern.
Next comes the unique Woven Basalt Fibre which is additive free super strong and resists heel dents.
The Bio-Matrix Resin is super strong and environmentally friendly with the best flex qualities of traditional PU and a longer lifespan than Epoxy.

Lib Tech surfboards are fitted with the lightest and toughest fin boxes on the market which are compatible with Pro Box, FCS, and all FCS dual tab style fins. They also use Sprock Blocks at the tail to add even more durability to the most fragile areas on the board. Even the leash plug has been given the same attention with 6061 T6 Aircraft aluminium pins and lightweight fibre composite cups.

"Since I first saw Lib Tech’s ECO ISO construction, I wanted to build a board with it. The strength to weight ratio, eco minded materials and techniques, and the fact that this tech was being built in the USA was incredibly interesting to me. I am stoked that the time has finally come and hope people enjoy riding them as we have enjoyed building them." – Matt Biolos

The Short Round is the latest high performance hybrid. In the fine tradition of the Rocket and its numerous impersonators, the Short Round bridges the gap between these easy riding hybrids and your regular high performance shortboard. The summer of 2014 saw the Short Round tested all around So Cal where it has more than impressed and created quite a buzz. The speed comes from the wider nose and low entry rocker, with a forward wide point and generous concaves throughout. The key to the Short Round's performance is the moderate but definitely not flipped up tail rocker, the double concave through the fins and the regulation, modern bump/squash tail popular in high performance, contest, small wave shortboard. This simple approach to the modern hybrid doesn't have any gimmicks, but there is a lot to be said for the old adage "less is more". The Short Round has a lot packed in to its modest template, but don't be fooled, this is a board with a heap of built in Grin Factor.

5’8 and I’m about 80kg and 6ft
Construction is all that I hoped it was, fully bombproof and surfs fantastic.
I would say it feels more skippy than a pu board but that’s not a bad thing.
It’s also super stiff and responsive.
Board definitely feels better in steeper waves but have surfed it in 2ft beach breaks and still goes well

I have had quite a few poor board choices down the line, I decided to spend a bit more on this board and seek as much advice as possible, have not regretted it. This board has been great, brought my surfing on a lot after only 10 months with it. I surf this most the time in Scarborough area anywhere from 2 - 8 ft but also took it out to Bali for 3 weeks and been around the UK. Where to start...

Construction - This thing is bulletproof, it has seen plenty of rocks and Balinese reef, it has a few marks but any other board would either be scrapped or have required a fair bit of repair, this thing barely shows it. It is a little heavier in the water so feels a little different from both epoxy and PU, this took a few sessions to get used to but stick with it because it is great. I would say more similar to PU than Epoxy but really in it's own category, I would take it over an epoxy.

Paddle power/ wave catching- This thing paddles great, definitely catches waves well and is GREAT for average NE conditions, fast on the front foot and loose off the tail. Bali/ hollower UK waves it struggles a little more especially when it pushes head high, the rail holds great off the tail but say you need to make a fast tighter drop with some front foot speed the rails are chunkier in the middle, definitely felt this in Bali when it slid out a few times. The flatter rocker make it a bit more difficult to bully down the face on take off as well. However these are the same features that makes it shine in a lot of British waves so a bit of a trade off. Bigger waves with a friendlier takeoff it handles itself great, been out in 8ft NE point breaks with a bit of a mellower take off and loved it! This thing is also great to duck dive, most the volume is in the chest and the nose thins straight off so if you sink the nose early and drive the board from your foot you can easily get it pretty deep considering how much volume it has (6'0=34l).

Small waves- Anything other than tiny rollers this thing is spot on. It can be surfed in virtually anything, though if the waves get too fat and slow you might finding yourself wanting a longboard, you certainly wouldn't NEED one though, this thing will hold it's own.

So is this thing perfect in head high reefs and 2ft rollers, not quite. But it holds it's own in 2-8 ft waves of pretty much any variety, that is a hell of a lot of versatility in one board. Definitely recommend.

Awesome board
Have been surfing this little gem for a few months now. Let's start with the positives: I'm a decent surfer but not a pro and this board as volume in all the right places to help me catch more waves, the low rocker helps maintaining speed even in the crappiest conditions, great flex always feel responsive, caught a few planes just one tiny scratch - the construction is solid, has got a nice skatey feel to it which is perfect in smaller waves. The not so positive: the construction is much more resistant than your standard board but you will still get pressure marks and dings, it's bloody expensive! Overall a really fun board which seems to be made to last too.

Good all round board
I have had this board for just over a year now, it sits in the middle of a 3 board quiver as my all round go to board. I'm a 72kg intermediate, a bit older than some, with the 5'10" @ 30.75cl, surfing in Portugal.

It is a good paddler for its size, volume slightly forward makes wave entry easy up until about head and a half for me. Lib Tech construction is slightly heavy but I have found this more of a benefit than a hindrance when wind and chop are around. The construction has been tested on rocks and I can say it is very strong, not showing any signs of the abuse I have given it. The squash tail is great for turns, I use it with Asher Pacey AP1 thrusters which are spot on and make me feel better than I am :) The board is a keeper for me, slightly higher volume than previous but that just means more waves without any downside.

fast!
Bought this board as my current board was becoming a bit battered and bruised. I loved that board so was worried about spending out big on a board that may not match It for speed, paddling and general feel. The short round surpassed my last board easily(and my old board is a great board). I took it out Saturday at coney beach, porthcawl, renowned for being gutless. It was off shore and the waves were head high. This board is absolutely flying!!! Gets into the wave easy, and is as responsive as you like.
I'm not sure I'd go out in anything over head with this board, and duck diving is a little tricky given its width. But small to head high it really is amazing. (maybe someone with more ability could handle this board in overhead, I can surf but I'm not ripping)
Best of all, with the 0% finance it meant not having to fork out over £600 in one go!
Thanks boardshop!

Handles the chop really well, feels a little different than PU but in a good way. And not a ding in sight yet!
I actually surfed the PU puddle jumper as well and I gotta say I like the libtech a lot..

Very pleased with the board and the customer service. Did
Very pleased with the board and the customer service. Did a custom order and there was a slight issue that was not boardshops fault, but they couldn't have done anymore to sort it out. This board is amazing, I wanted something that turned better than the wider tailed groveller/hybrids yet still paddled and caught waves well. An excellent compromise. Lovely finish.
