Firewire FST Cornice Surfboard 5ft 7 FCS II - White
So what does this mean for the average surfer, the board paddles remarkably well but it definitely needs a half decent wave, it is not, repeat not a groveller! It comes into its own in chest high plus waves, preferably with a bit of push and a cleanish face. Board size is pretty straight forward, look for the same volume as you'd ride in a Vanguard or a Vader.
The rapid response flex memory in the Future Shapes Technology used in these boards yields great speed through the turns whilst the parabolic rail configuration guarantees 100% return memory for years.
Firewire surfboards feature some very distinct construction traits that set them aside from other boards currently available:
1) parabolic balsa rails
2) dual density EPS and advanced composite core
The parabolic balsa rails flex at the start of a turn storing energy and rebound through the turn releasing built up energy in the form of speed. The spring back of the parabolic rails to the original rocker triggers rapid acceleration, like an arrow shot from a bow. The construction materials, a unique formulation of hi-tech epoxy resins and advanced composites mean that these boards maintain the lively feel you get with brand new polyurethane boards, but are up to 20% lighter and will last 5+ times longer.
What this all means for surfers is a step forward in the age old trade off of performance versus durability that has traditionally limited polyurethane boards. The nature of the core technology in these boards allows them to rebound in and out of turns with little loss of speed.
Boardshop is stoked to be a key partner for Firewire surfboards across Europe and beyond, we've been with them since the very start. Firewire surfboards are more durable than other surfboard manufacturing processes, and for 90% of surfers they will improve your surfing. Firewire is pushing the limits of applying new technology and innovation to surfboard design and always has an eye on the environmental impact of what they do, they truly are different to the other board companies out there. The staff here have surfed pretty much every board in the Firewire range at some time or another and we speak to surfers from all over the world and get their feedback on how the boards perform in all sorts of conditions so we're well placed to talk about all aspects of Firewire surfboards. I'm 5'4 10st ish, my current quiver is a 5'0 evo, 5'5 sci Fi and 5'8 v4, between 23-26lts (bit of a tomo fanatic!) I have pretty much all bases covered with my quiver but was after something for the winter with more float and less length than the 5'8 v4, and saw this. Ideally I be on the 5'3 but saw the 5'5 for £350 and couldnt say no. First few surfs were in 2ft mush and weren't great but once the wave had some shape this board flew. I normally ride 3/16 to 1/4 thick so 3/8 thick is a bit chunky for me, however, because of the step rail and knife edge at the back I could put in some seriously good turns, the tail shape enables you to do really fast whips and slide the tail more than my tomos and down the line speed is as fast as the tomos. Surfed it as a quad and Tri, quads super smooth/very fast and Tri rips the wave to bits! Surfed it up 6/7ft face no problem, and sticks late drops fine.
Summary: it looks weird (my son calls it the willy board!), but for £350 you can't go wrong, fst is bomb proof, fast, fluent and the back hand potential is unreal. Finally: You've got to stick your foot back to make it go, but don't be put off by the rail to rail surfing in the videos on line, you can surf the cornice in an attacking tomo style and it will blow your mind! Buy one and if it's not your thing, at £350 you can easily get your money back on it. (If I had the 5'3 it would be 5 stars)
