Description

This Round Tail version of the Lost El Patron surfboard is designed to give a little more "upper end" performance than the stock Squash Tail board.

The tail is the most obvious change but the overall outline is a little sleeker with a bit less volume. Matt Biolos suggests riding the Round Tail a couple of inches longer than the Squash making it a slight step-up for better days.

If you were considering the El Patron but wanted a board to "do it all" the El Patron RT would make a great travel board which would cope with pretty much any conditions you're going to encounter at home and overseas. A slight increase in length won't overly effect the smaller wave performance but it will definitely improve the upper-end with extra paddle speed and composure in bigger waves.

The El Patron is going to appeal a lot of surfers needing a more forgiving daily driver but don't want "just another hybrid" or bastardized groveller.

The El Patron is Matt Biolos's personal board which he designed and shaped to counteract middle age, a little extra weight, mediocre fitness and crowded surf.

It's dead easy to pump volume and inches into current surfboard models but it's another thing altogether for the board to retain the performance traits of the original. That's the key with the El Patron, even with it's generous proportions it still has a really performancy feel which lends itself to proper shortboard surfing while still allowing the rider to hold his or her own in crowded line ups where you normally have to sacrifice performance to snaffle a wave from the younger fitter guys.

Lost's El Patron’ is primarily based on a couple of higher volume boards Matt shaped for Kolohe Andino who requested a larger dims quiver which would “still carve and turn like a thinner board”.

Both the round tail and squash tail versions of the El Patron paddle fast and produce heaps of drive with a low rocker, minimal concaves and a generous lift in the tail; no concave in the nose, slight single concave in the middle which fades into a slight vee through the fins and flat out the tail. The lack of severe concaves and the extra foam delivers easy and fast paddling which in turn gets you into waves early and thereby able to compete when its busy on the peak.

Another clever feature of this board is the reduced thickness of the stringer (2 ply instead of 3 ply) which helps the El Patron retain a similar flex pattern to a regular, thinner performance board and keep it feeling lively with plenty of "return" from your bottom turn and powerful carves. If you're worried about the thinner stringer potentially affecting the boards strength, this is more than counteracted by the extra thickness of the board.

The reality is that the El Patron would be the perfect forgiving "shortboard" with a genuine performance outline which gives it a broad appeal. If you're a bit older and not quite as fit as you'd like to be, but still consider yourself a competent shortboarder, then the El Patron will tick all your boxes.

If we don't have the Lost surfboard you're looking for, or the stock dims don't work for you, just give us a ring on (44) 01243 674250 or email info@boardshop.co.uk and we'll happily discuss a custom order for you.

We're absolutely stoked to be stocking Matt Biolos' amazing shapes and would happily consider taking your old or unwanted surfboard as a trade-in against a new Lost surfboard.

Great good wave board for a big guy
As a 17 stone guy that can surf I’ve struggled to find a HPSB below the 7’ mark. Traditional high performance shapes end up too long when blown up to my volume, especially when I need a couple of extra litres for average waves in the UK, wearing a 5mm wetsuit. I’ve been to very good local shapers, but always end up compromising with a more hybrid shape to reduce the length and pack in the volume. Other than the Rusty Panda, which I couldn’t easily get hold of in the UK and some guy in the US shaping boards for big guys, this is the first high volume HPSB that I’ve seen for a big guy that can surf.
I’ve surfed this quite a bit now and for me it is definitely an excellent good wave board. It goes really well in head high+ clean waves and it is refreshing to have such a responsive board after years of compromise, trying to pack in the volume. As you would expect from such a refined shape, it is quite unforgiving and won’t go as well in not so good waves. You need to be able to surf and have a half decent wave for this board to really come alive.
To summarise, I would highly recommend this to a bigger guy that can surf, who is looking for a HPSB to use when the waves are pumping. If you’re coming down from bigger boards and looking to push your surfing I would not recommend this and steer you more toward more of a hybrid shape.

One board quiver
After putting on a few extra kilos and not seeming to be having as much fun when the surf was pumping I soon realised I needed a bigger board! After doing some research I decided this was the board that ticked most boxes and would be happy to use in any conditions home or abroad! I’ve only used it once and so far so good! I’m yet to test it in real good waves but I’m confident this will be a great board!

paddles so well and still surfs good
was persuaded into buying this board by Ian at boardshop, wasn't looking at it to start with just wanted more waves and still have a board that surfs good. Surfed it 7 or 8 times over the last 2 weeks its on fire, so so easy to paddle and catch waves on but moves like a proper shortboard, super stoked thanks guys
