Description

The Slater Designs LFT Cymatic surfboard is going to set a new bench-mark for high-performance shortboards...FACT. There is already unprecedented levels of exited frothing from fans of Tomo and Kelly's previous creations and the Cymatic looks to have taken another huge stride towards the ultimate everyday shortboard for pros and Joes alike.

Kelly told Stab about the Cymatic "The minimal amount of board to do the maximum amount of surfing. We chopped the nose off ahead of the rail line you need and went with a pretty wide bat tail (like the Sci-Fi model). With the added bite of the channels the tail still holds while giving plenty of lift. This edit (check the video below!!) is from one session at Haleiwa in January. I actually took the board there as a joke that day cause it was too big for what I thought it could handle. I got my best rides earlier that session but this edit gives you an idea. This is a four fin 5'3 x 18 5/8 x 2 5/16 with 25.5L. I don’t want to ride anything else right now and everyone who rides it wants to take it off my hands.

It's not that difficult to identify the Cymatic's parentage, with obvious elements of the Sci-Fi and Omni models featuring strongly, in fact It really does look like the result of some clandestine liaison of these two models.

All too often these amalgamations look great on paper but usually result in a dysfunctional board that really doesn't know its own raison d'être...not the case here kids; the functionally of the Cymatic looks to be absolutely spot-on and the perfect melding of these two ground-breaking surfboard designs. The brilliant double bat wing tail adds serious grip on the wave face successfully offsetting the extreme lift and speed created by the "Quad Inside Single Concave". The skilful blending of these features along with the reduced swing weight of the Omni’s nose, Tommo has dreamt and created what looks to be a truly magic board that surfs more akin to the Sci-Fi but with a tad more rocker.

According to the Firewire/Slater Designs website the Cymatic is listed with an "Ideal Wave" from 3 to 6ft....but one view of the Haleiwa footage and you'll see the Cymatic's potential in solid conditions....so go as big as you dare.

Firewire's LFT or Linear Flex Technology is an eco friendly construction process that results in a durable board with a unique flex pattern. LFT uses an 18mm wide Composite Springer HD Suspension System that runs from nose to tail (in effect a space age stringer) and is overlaid with a top-deck sheet to improve the boards resistance to 'ridging' often seen on traditional PU boards with a wooden stringer. LFT produces a feel somewhat akin to a brand-new PU surfboard, but with a huge hike in durability, this will last for the lifespan of the board! Enjoy the lively sensation of a brand new board with the added durability of modern sandwich construction.

Slater Designs Cymatic, 5'7" 31litres,
Awesome board, replaced a 5'9" Omni, 34litres, feels more like my performance shortboard, with the extra rocker, with one surf in head high waves, it has loads of potential, can't wait to use it as a quad,!..
Great service received and no Bull. advice from "Boardshop," Cheers,

Cymatic 5'10 V36.4 l
Delivered to Ireland 8 days from purchase date which I thought was pretty good going. 1st surf was in 1 ft sideshore so I wasnt able to get a good feel for the board. However surfed it today in fairly clean 5ft - 7ft surf and had some good waves on it. Turns on a dime and made some fairly ledge like take offs. Paddling into waves took a bit more effort than I'm used to but it's been a long flat summer so my paddle fitness isn't the best. This one's definately a keeper but I would say if you're a bit over 75 kg and on the wrong side of 50 you might go a tad bigger maybe 5'11" or more..

It flies.
So I finally got fed up of the constant storms and lack of decent waves in North Devon and headed to The Wave in Bristol to give the Cymatic its first outing. I have never ridden a board shorter than 6ft as I am tall, so this was going to be interesting. As I paddled out the board felt tiny, but the volume (very well hidden) meant it paddled well (even in fresh water).

The first wave came through and I made the take off and the board raced off straight into a flat section where I lost all speed and fell off the back of the wave. On the next wave my back foot completely missed the tail of the board and I went through the washing machine. I had a word with myself on the way back out and realised I had to sit much further forward on the board when taking off. The next wave was a dream, great take off, easy cutback to avoid the flat section then a couple of off the tops. The session continued in this sort of vein for the next 45 minutes.

I had heard the board is fast and it is, a couple of pumps and you are away. It is a very light board and the lack of swing weight on the nose means it turns effortlessly under your feet. I had a quad set up on the board and was able to slide the tail a couple of times when I pushed hard. It will take me another couple of sessions to get it dialled in, but first impressions are really positive. I wanted a board that was more performance orientated and it certainly meets that criteria. I was nervous about going 3" shorter than my normal board (as recommend) and I almost went for the 5' 10" but I am glad I went for the 5' 9", there is plenty of float there.

If you want to challenge and progress your surfing I would recommend giving the Cymatic a go.

Amazing all rounder, lots of speed, quick turning and lively, surprisingly versatile
I've had this board for a while now and surfed 20+ times so far in a range of conditions, so thought I'd give a review. For reference I'm 6'2" and 84kg, been surfing about 25 years but much of that time not regularly as don't live on the coast so I'd say I'm an experienced intermediate with average fitness. I probably do half of my surfing abroad on holidays to places like France and Portugal, at home I surf throughout the south west anywhere from Bournemouth to South Wales to Devon and Cornwall.

I was looking for a really good all rounder that could handle a bit of everything, I wanted to cut down my quiver drastically and basically have one board that could do it all, other than when its really weak and I'll just pinch the wife's minimal for a cruise. I actually sold 4 other boards including my previous daily driver to buy this board. My other reason for changing was I wanted to increase my volume, increase my wave count and give me some extra assistance at times when I've not surfed for a while. My previous daily was a 6'2" Hellfire at 33.7L that I've had for years and loved, I made a substantial jump in volume to a 6'0" Cymatic at 40.2L - I wasn't looking to go this much but the Cymatic came up cheap in like-new condition so I jumped on it. However as soon as I picked up the board I was amazed out how well it hides the volume, honestly I can't see where they've put it, to handle it feels like a board with 5L less volume, it feels substantially smaller under the arm than my mates 6'0" Pukas 69er Step-Down which is 38L, which feels alot wider and with more meat in the rails. Picking it up next to the Hellfire it feels about the same volume, which is amazing as its some 6.5L more.

Its fair to say I wasn't sure about buying one of these, its a bit of an odd-ball design and I had no idea if I'd hate it or if the design would be beyond my abilities. In fact the first time I used it (at Towan, Newquay) on a reasonable shoulder high day I really didn't get on with it and thought I'd made a mistake, with the unusual shape I kept getting my positioning on the board a bit wrong. That was until the last wave of the session when I put in a bottom turn that suddenly shot me down the line with way more speed than I expected or probably had ever achieved from such a turn, this one wave was enough to convince me to persist with the board. The next morning I surfed at Fistral which was waist to chest high and cleanish, this time everything clicked alot better, I caught a ton of waves and put in some nice maneuvers (for me).

Ever since then I've got on brilliantly with it, in fact I think its a bit of magic. I've spent a week in Portugal with it where we scored nice shoulder to overhead waves every day, have surfed it in choppy wind swell at Bournemouth pier, have surfed small 2ft Woolacombe to barrelling overhead low tide Croyde, and even inland at the Wave in Bristol - so far its done me proud everywhere. I'm confident the board will pretty much go in any conditions I'm likely to surf, from 2ft to 2ft overhead.

It caries so much speed with the planing hull design, straight rail line and the extra volume, yet still turns super sharp and hard in the pocket. It easily makes sections that I simply wouldn't have made on my other boards, and as a result I'm getting longer rides and putting in more turns on each wave. I am definately surfing better on this board than I pretty much ever have on anything else, its really given my surfing a new lease of life and its a board that wants you to push it and encourages you to make more dynamic turns than you normally would. I've tried it as a quad and thruster with large AM2 in both setups and prefer the quad, it just seems to have more drive while still staying maneuverable and has a fast squirty sort of feeling to it.

Its a board that takes a little getting used to, but persist - its worth it!

Cymatic 6”2
Been riding a sci-fi since it was released 6”2 @ 37litres i’m 6”2 and 15stone and had no problems riding. Recently i’ve joined a gym with my 13 yr old son and have ploughed on a stone in weight which caused a few issues with the float of the board, felt like i was pushing water as board sat lower in water. I made the decision to get similar board but with more float cos i cant be arsed to diet weight back to 15stone. I went for the 6”2 cymatic for the extra 5 or so litres of volume. The board arrived very well packed and in perfect condition from the lads at boardshop uk

Cymatic......
I've owned a lot of Tomo boards, they have all bought me a lot of Joy and in-between have owned a Mayhem a Pyzel and have to say once you start with the Tomo shapes their hard to get the same feeling else where.

So far have ridden the Cymatic in 3-4ft Trebarwith, 3-4 Constantine and 3-4 Watergate. As it's summer and not the Winter power all the sessions have been on a Quad. I probably prefer a Tri set up but the Quad has been working great.

A bit of History.... for those that may read this and it be of help. I've enjoyed the other Tomo's but after living with them have always had a few issues.. hence jumping back and forth from a traditional shape to a Tomo.

The Van Guard, it worked, was radical and new for its time, but twitchy and had a tiny sweet spot.
The Vader, I loved, was fast and loose but because it had such a big tail it struggled on steep faces.... but a lot of the time was great fun.
The Evo, was fun, but felt too floaty for me, I know a lot of people love it but i just didn't feel connected on it and it also struggled on steeper/larger waves.
The Omni, that I initially loved after living with it, was great for down the line surfing and was really fast, it struggled with vertical moves. it works great on hollow take off and hang on days, but for the UK and turns it's not there, the tail is just too drawn in.

So in-between those other shapes i've had (and got) traditional performance boards but the trouble is they don't have the Tomo lift and its too much like going back to the 1990's and it just feels a bit safe! its riding shapes and boards that all feel very similar.

So I rolled the dice with Cymatic which has had some mixed reviews.

From what I have felt so far the Cymatic is very user friendly, paddles great and is easy to catch waves on. I would describe it more as a daily driver than an out and out performance board. It is Fast and very manoeuvrable in a quad. When you take off the board feels stable and you can choose your line, either drawn out bottom turn or high line..... it changes direction really easy and is super fun to surf.

I have a Pyzel that is a brilliant board but for me, its just missing a bit of Magic that Tomo gets into boards. So far the Cymatic is an absolute go to board, I adore it. I know some of the guys at Boardshop are not the biggest fans of it but it's fantastic if you want to throw it about in turns.

If you like fast down the line and drawn out rail turns..... the Omni will suit you better....
If you want to take off and thrash, go vertical and all the rest, the Cymatic will put a massive smile on your face! It's wonderful.... you can chuck it where ever you want and it's super happy to oblige!

Magic carpet
Pertinent deets:
6'2, 85kg, surfing 25 years. Can pass myself off as 'advanced' some days but in reality i'm pretty average.

Unboxing this board, I was immediately unsure whether I picked the right size. 5'8 coming in at 33L, it definitely did NOT feel like 33L. the rails were so tapered it was hard to gauge the thickness, actually it was hard gauge anything with this board since it practically looks like a spaceship, not a surfboard!

Took it for a spin today at a secret right hander, 3-4ft hollow take off, reforming sections in inside to play with, in short - perfect to test a new board.

Immediate impression was that I had absolutely nothing to worry about in terms of floatation or paddling. i've no idea how it does it.. but it does!

The board is EPIC. I don't think I've connected with a board as well as i have with this one. It feels so free in the tail but yet so connected on rail. Like you can push it hard on rail but wrap it around in the pocket without any restriction whatsoever. Particularly impressive was how it maintained it's speed after speed-sapping turns off the top or cutbacks. I literally did not have to pump the board once.

I've owned quite a few boards and oftentimes there is a trade-off between speed and drive with release, sometimes you have to sacrifice a bit of one or the other but with this board it's the perfect marriage of both.

It is definitely a board that sits in the high-performance range, you must have your feet in the sweet spot otherwise the board will not fire. The rails are LOW, which means it is more sensitive. so leaning too hard on the rail will throw you off - but the benefit of this when you get it right is how it flows from rail to rail beautifully.

If you're thinking about purchasing this board, i highly recommend that you do. Through these guys at Boardshop of course.

Best board ever
So good I have two of them. Sold 3 boards since buying one last year. If the waves have any punch to them at all I don’t want to be on anything else.

Highly and hugely recommended!
A few points to help anyone else out who’s looking at getting a Cymatic…

Sizing: I’m about 86kgs and having not surfed for a few years I went for the 5’10” with 36ltrs…my previous board has 34ltrs and just due to nervousness of the length, I wasn’t brave enough to go any smaller…that was a bit of a mistake as the board produces so much lift and speed so easily that you really do need to match littreage with what you normally surf or go a tad smaller and not be afraid of the lack of length! It’s funny, but as soon as you get one under your arm, you totally forget about length! Luckily, Boardshop do their excellent board exchange and I’ll be swapping it out for a 5’8” or 5’9”.

Foot position for turns is pretty crucial. You’ve got to get them back, once in the right place, you’ll just feel the board light up and do things you weren’t expecting to be able to do! That being said, if you’re looking to gun it around a section, super easy pumping being further forward.

Fin set up is really important! Having tried both thruster and quad, I preferred the thruster. I basically had two sets of thruster fins, with a softer and harder set up.
What I found worked best was the harder fronts and softer rear, with these the board really turned on and lit up in both feel and turns. All soft fins and it felt a bit washy, all hards and a tad stiff.
I also had some quad rears and found that it was best with softer fronts, but actually I think I needed softer quad rears to really work. Looking forward to trying it with softer quad rears.
The harder fins in front, with the quad rears in combination with the tail width and lift the board has was just way too stiff for me…

Overall, this board is absolutely amazing and except in extremely large or small waves can be a one board quiver…Highly and hugely recommended!

Unbelievable
I have surfed the Omni for two years and loved it. I wasn’t sure the cymatic was for me, having seen the video of Kelly I felt it may be too high performance. I was wrong. It’s forgiving, fast yet so controlled.

It makes you think you can do anything and goes anywhere on a wave, it’s super responsive and you feel you may lose control then it suddenly grips and you’re flying back out of a turn unexpectedly, straight into the next.

It’s got hold when you want it, feeling poised like the Omni but much more playful. I’ve surfed it below waist high and got it going, just takes more effort than my Chumlee but it’s perfectly capable.

I’m not a great surfer but surfing this board makes me feel much better than I am. I use it in any decent UK waves up to head and a half. Even deals with wind and chop well, something the Omni struggled with. Honestly I cannot think of a negative! Get one.
