Description

Rob Machado's hotly anticipated Firewire Helium Seaside has landed.

Whilst absolutely loving the skatey feel of his Go Fish over the last couple of years, Rob was interested in fine-tuning the board to achieve a little more performance for more carves, tighter turns and some composure in the tube.

Rather than 'throw the baby out with the bath water', Rob set about refining his beloved Go Fish into a 'ripper' where the Go Fish remains a more 'cruisey' and fun surfboard.

The tail on the Seaside has less area, the tips of the swallow have been narrowed and the nose pulled in creating more curve and a board that fits the pocket and turns tighter in the critical part of the wave.

The Seaside is designed as a quad and has its concaves and bottom contours based around that...so don't ask if there will be a five fin or thruster option...it's a quad period! Rob said, "I actually redesigned the entire concave setup that I've been using in the Moonbeam and go Fish, and did it with a quad setup in mind so that it all works together with the new fin set (coming soon from Futures!)".

Rob named the 'Seaside' after his home break Seaside Reef, Cardiff CA. The board is designed to excel in beach breaks, point breaks. Rob decided on Firewire's Helium construction for the Seaside to keep it nice and lightweight, super-responsive and really durable and ideal for smaller and less punchy conditions.

Firewire’s Helium tech is all about making an already amazing set of construction options even better. Its lighter, more durable than regular PU boards and thus far is proving a little more robust than Firewire's LFT construction. High Density Aerospace Composite Deck Skins and a new Paulownia/Balsa mix on the rails gives a faster flex response. Having surfed the tech in a couple of different models it does feel light but the speed through a stiffer feel and responsiveness is exceptional, Helium is here to stay.

Firewire surfboards are more durable than other surfboard manufacturing processes, and for 90% of surfers they will improve your surfing. Firewire is pushing the limits of applying new technology and innovation to surfboard design and always has an eye on the environmental impact of what they do, they truly are different to the other board companies out there. Firewire have come a long way since the early boards and the range of shapes and tech just gets better and better. A big chunk of the boards in the range are perfectly suited to the waves that 90% of us surf on a regular basis so if you haven't already give them a try.

The staff here have surfed pretty much every surfboard in the Firewire range at some time or another and we speak to surfers from all over the world and get their feedback on how the boards perform in all sorts of conditions so we're well placed to talk about all aspects of Firewire surfboards. We're happy to consider trading in your old board against a new Firewire, so If you have any questions about this we'd be delighted to answer them and advise on any potential board choices or enquiries you might have, just drop us an email to info@boardshop.co.uk or call us on 0044 (0) 1243 674250.

Still my fave board ever!
I bought the 5,8 Seaside (I'm 6,1, 13 stone & hate rating myself, although I can surf!!) over two years ago - see review from Paul G on page 1.
I love it so much that despite all the ridiculous choice out there for me (frontrunners were JS Red Baron 5,7, Black Baron 5,9, Christenson 5,8 Twin or a decadent Album Plasmic 5,6) I ended up just buying another Seaside, an inch shorter! If it ain't broke don't fix it. I've had the best waves of my life on this little beauty and I'll be very happy with more of the same thanks very much! Had a couple of onshore but overhead sessions and with some punch and speed it felt more nimble under my feet but and soooooooo fast.
Didn't go for the new Volcanic version as I didn't want to wait, I love the Paulownia rear end on the 2020/1 model and I already had the Machado quads in FCS2, as Firewire no longer work with FCS. However I did end up getting the Machado Twin Tab (Scarfini) quad fins simply because they're frickin gorgeous and work with the exposed timber in the rail and tail!
Boardshop guys were excellent as ever; Roger agreed with my reasoning and Matt quickly sorted me out with the 0% finance plan at 10am and at 9am the following morning the board, fins and 10mm Global 5,8 Hybrid bag arrived at my door, in excellent packaging! Yes that's 23 hours ... skills!
I hit 50 yesterday and it's nice to know that while my teeth are getting longer my shortboards are still getting shorter! Cheers.

Everyone should have one
Recently bought a 5.11 after advice from the Boardshop team. Finally managed to get out on it and it is easily the best board I’ve had. Awesome to paddle (even for an older guy) and the quad only set up is perfect! Everyone in the UK should have one of these!

Ordered a 5,6,

There’s not much to say about this excellent charger. Had to sand the finboxes a bit to make the futures fit but finally all perfect!

Hope u guys are back in the EU soon, the stop at the customs was a bit bitter. Well packaged - great support by the boardshop crew!

Currently my personal favourite. 5'6
First of all, excellent service from the Boardshop team. The board was packed so well and immaculate when it arrived.

I've held off the review for a while now as I'd like to leave an honest review after at least a month of riding this board. It has now been two months since I've received this board and it has been one of my best decisions yet. I've had my eye out for this board since it came out but due to constant travel it wasn't on my shortlist as the price is pretty hefty but since being back in the UK and back in Bournemouth (yes isn't the greatest spot but hey you take what you get init?) I decided to splurge on a decent board that'll hopefully help me progress. Of course, I bought the Machado quads to pair em up, and yes it works extremely well! to add to that I paired it up with the CI Al Merrick Keels and honestly felt more drive to it but it might be due to favoritism as I do prefer twins and this is my first quad board, so it is very interesting.

It took awhile to understand the board, the first time on felt like the flash this is by far one of the fastest boards I've ever ridden, to the point that it felt like it knew where I wanted to go and reached there before I could think of the next move but once you understand what the board wants its a dream, honest wave magnet. I somehow feel like the board shines between the waist to overhead surf as tested it out to North Devon a few days ago during the hurricane sam sesh and was aces not saying it doesn't work as well in the smaller seshes, it does. I would personally swap the quads to twins when it's waist and below as I personally like the looseness of it but once it gets bigger definitely felt more comfortable with the quads.

The paddle support this board offers is also a plus point I bought the 5'6 and I'm 5'9, that little rocker it has helps a lot glides you perfectly in and eases the takeoff and boom it generates speed by itself and since I've gotten this board and have ridden it the last two months it has drastically improved my cutbacks and turns and has helped me slow down as its a "less is more" kinda board, as I said it produces so much speed you don't actually have to pump too much to make the maneuvers, you just got to time it right. Loving it to the max.

tested this board in Brn, K-bay, Cornwall, and Devon. Of course, the Atlantic swell is always better the channel slush we get haha but can't complaint works in all condition tbh, so if you're contemplating on this board don't, I surf it in 1-3ft slush here in BRN and still works like a charm the fact it's so fast helps.
However, I do believe you need to be able to already surf to ride this board, definitely not a beginner board I realized when I was in devon a lot of people have this board and struggle to catch anything or get nasty wipeouts so I guess stick to your lane. Having fun is more important than having a beautiful board yes it'll help you progress if you already know how to do maneuvers and want to work on em but won't work if you don't know anything. It's like driving an F1 car without prior training haha.

Another plus point is the helium2 design, the visible paulownia rail at the tail looks amazing haha.
Thanks, Boardshop team!

5'3 Seaside - A Go fish on steroids!
First thing I'd say about this board is it's not a groveller. If you want something for waist high or fat waves, get a go fish or something else. The seaside needs a wave with a bit of shape and push, otherwise it just feels like it's being held back. I've found it best in chest high and above. Didn't notice any difference in weight between this and my LFT but the tech is definitely more lively. I found the Helium tech to be quite corky so does feel a bit weird at the beginning. (Don't oversize) Also you don't need the Machado fins to make this board work, any quad set will do.

Superb Board
I've taken it out over 15 times now and the board is so much fun. Just like all the reviews you will find, its fast, paddles great and goes well in a variety of conditions. Go with the Machado quad fin set, it works great.

Needless to say I'm so happy with the purchase!
