Firewire

Firewire Surfboards

It was almost 10 years ago when the very first Firewire surfboards arrived at Boardshop and we knew immediately that this progressive and innovative brand was a game changer in the world of surfing and surfboard construction. Using an EPS Core and Parabolic Balsa rails Firewire completely broke with tradition, they ditched the central stringer and succeeded in constructing a lightweight, durable surfboard with a feel akin to a PU Fibreglass surfboard without any of the corky and dead feel of your average epoxy surfboard.

The easiest way to explain the sensation when riding a Firewire is that it has all the pop and return you get from a brand-new PU surfboard with amplified acceleration from your bottom turn propelling you into your next manoeuvre. This new board feel can drop off with a well surfed PU board, but remains for the extended lifespan of a Firewire. Almost as soon as the first Firewire surfboards left our warehouse we started getting some pretty frenzied feedback from our customers here in the UK and abroad. The most frequent comment being that the surfboard was actually making them surf better. 10 years on, this is still THE most common feedback we get! At boardshop we try and keep the classic shapes in stock all the time, including the Dominator, Baked Potato , Spitfire, Addvance, EVO and Vader.

Late in 2015 some huge news broke - 11 times WSL Champion and all-round legend, Kelly Slater pitched-in and bought a majority share in Firewire! Kelly has long been a supporter of environmentally friendly manufacturing processes, and Firewire’s commitment to using sustainable materials is likely to have been a big influence in his decision. Kelly has been working with Daniel (Tomo) Thomson, and the first Slater Designs surfboards are set to land in May 2016.
