WHAT WE SAY ABOUT THIS PRODUCT
The Firewire Sweet Potato is the surfboard that we'd rather keep a secret, that magic board that'll put your wave count through the roof even when the waves are small and junky. The 'buzz' surrounding this funky little board has been unprecedented, at last a board designed to rip in the smallest conditions when normally you'd head home and leave it to the longboards! The Sweet Potato is your 'go-to' board when the surf is knee to head high!
"Clearly the Sweet Potato is not your average surfboard." says designer Dan Mann, "The outline is the most striking design change from the status quo. The SP dramatically changes the ratio between the length and width of a board while still allowing the design to perform at a very high level. While the relationship of the outline and volume obviously have a big impact, without the big changes in the rocker, bottom contour, fin placement, and the flex characteristics of the stronger and lighter materials, the Sweet Potato would have limited performance as has been the case with these designs in the past".
Another of the noticeable design attributes Dan added is the aggressive bottom contour which creates considerable lift. The deep double concave with a 'spine' in the middle divide the board in half (length-wise) isolating the fins, rocker and bottom on one side of the board at a time. This allows the board to get on a rail quickly. The Sweet Potato is the board you always bring on a surf check, and you'll find yourself ripping on small days where you'd otherwise go home. And it will hold its own in bigger waves as well.
The rapid response flex memory in the Future Shapes Technology used in these boards yields great speed through the turns whilst the parabolic rail configuration guarantees 100% return memory for years.
Firewire surfboards feature some very distinct construction traits that set them aside form other boards currently available: 1) parabolic balsa rails 2) dual density EPS and advanced composite core. The parabolic balsa rails flex at the start of a turn storing energy and rebound through the turn releasing built up energy in the form of speed. The spring back of the parabolic rails to the original rocker triggers rapid acceleration, like an arrow shot from a bow. The construction materials, a unique formulation of hi-tech epoxy resins and advanced composites mean that these boards maintain the lively feel you get with brand new polyurethane boards, but are up to 20% lighter and will last 5+ times longer.
This manufacturing process has won environmental awards and has created a range of lightweight and durable custom boards that are quickly being recognised for their awesome performance, just ask Taj Burrow!
What this all means for surfers is a step forward in the age old trade off of performance versus durability that has traditionally limited polyurethane boards. The nature of the core technology in these boards allows them to rebound in and out of turns with little loss of speed. The secret to improved surfing is maintaining and using this speed to go higher, bigger, longer or whatever does it for you! Firewire also won the SURFBOARD OF THE YEAR award at the recent SIMA awards - that's basically the surf industry deciding who has done the best job, and is an extremely prestigious award. Thanks to 10 years of research and the expertise of shapers Nev Hyman and Dan Mann the future of surfing is changing, these guys are calling this Future Shapes Technology, we like it!
